Sega CD information, please
Re: Sega CD information, please
I saw one guy selling one as untested, cos he didnt have the leads but the leads were included in the auction lol

Fortunately poster, the most likely suspect if you Sega CD model 2 is not working is the fuse, which is reasonably easy to replace with some soldering skills. If it doesn't power up thats your problem. But I'm getting ahead of myself for right now. Lets wait till it comes and see what happens. There are several good games, depending on your tastes.

Well, it arrived today. It acts completely dead. I made sure to clean the Genesis contacts, but that didn't do anything. Also, I'm using the correct 10 something AC adapter, so that's not it either. Does anyone know of a good SCD repair guide that's not on Youtube? (youtube takes forever to load for me.)

This is a decent overview:

I just recently had to do this myself and it was easier than i thought it would be. I recommend installing a fuse holder, so if the fuse blows again it can just be swapped out.

One thing I'm wondering is: can the fuse be broken even if it looks fine? Because it does, to me at least. No melted areas or scorch marks. Also, a side note: the inside of the SCD smells like WD-40, and I had to clean up some old, dusty residue from the spray. I don't know if this would be the problem or not.

If you have a multimeter you could check around the board for continuity in case you have a short somewhere.
The Sega CD model i have had the surface mounted fuse (on the underside of the board) and it didn't look burnt or damaged either, but once it was replaced the sega cd worked like a champ. That would be the first thing i would try, as it's the most common problem with sega cd's.

Yes the fuse can be dead and look completely fine. You take the posters advice about soldering in a fuse holder so you can easy replace the fuse with a glass one in the future. You can get them at radio shack. To be honest if it doesn't power on, thats the issue you want it to be, because that is so easy to fix.

Can I get both the fuse and fuse holder at Radio Shack, or were else should I get them? Because I am clueless as to were I'm going to get this stuff at the moment. And do they cost very much?Jamisonia wrote:Yes the fuse can be dead and look completely fine. Call Radio Shack and ask them for the specific parts and prices. I don't believe fuses should cost too much.BoringSupreez wrote:Can I get both the fuse and fuse holder at Radio Shack, or were else should I get them? I believe the model 2 uses a 2.5 Amp fuse, so a four pack would $2.99. Fuses are rarely sold individually.
A fuse holder like this one:

would allow you to drill a hole in the back of the CD and put the end of the fuse holder out, so if you ever needed to replace it you could do so without even opening the Sega CD. Thats $1.99.
Unfortunately I've only ever seen these at an actual radio shack store

They're 2.99, and are a little more bulky, but I believe there's plenty of room on the Sega CD.
