Optimizing code has got barely anything to do with storage capacity. Less storage just meant more compressed textures or less textures, and less sounds/videos/stuff in general.

I doubt they could fit San Andreas on a gamecube disk, and that's probably why there was never a San Andres stories on the PSP (same capacity as the gamecube)

PS2 is still my favorite. A perfect time for collecting games for any PS2 gamer. Not too many new game releases, but TONs cheap at love it or hate it Gamestop. HDAdvance/HDLoader just really makes this console sweet.

Funny. That game was the exact example I had in mind when I said 'most PS2 games' instead of 'No PS2 games'.

That game was a beast.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

one thing I like about the extra space on PS2 discs is "extras" though... Like how the Street Fighter anime movie is on the SF Collection. So awesome.

I think there were some cross platform games that included Japanese voice overs in the PS2 and Xbox versions but not the gamecube one.

It's kind of sad that MS didn't want their fanboys to cry and payed Square-enix not to include the Japanese voices with the PS3 version of FF13 (yeah no source for this, but really there was no other excuse for it)

That would've killed Nintendo.
Oh, absolutely. Even though cartridges are better than optical media, it's a lot more expensive and it gets even more expensive the more storage space there is.

I think Nintendo made the right decision going with cartridges for the Nintendo 64. It's just a shame that most people didn't understand it back then.

150 million sold, and I am not an owner of a single one.

I really should buy one sometime, it's so cheap, and there's way too many games to choose from.

I wonder if a year of new releases, one holiday season and a price cut could push the DS to match it?

Similar to how games would receive poor scores on review if they were not 3D during that time period. Everyone was so busy moving on to 'the next big thing' that no value was seen in technology and techniques that already existed.

Only that, from a game design point of view, there are many advantages to 2D gameplay, but there are no advantages to cartridges as a format over optical media. I love cartridges as well, but they would have killed the industry if they had stayed.

Load times are a huge advantage, as well as not requiring an external memory card for saves. Especially when you look at the drives of the PS1/Saturn/N64 era, the N64 games loaded much much faster than the optical competition.
