Painting a Saturn model 2?

Post by Xeogred »

It's an import/modded system and is pretty much grey/yellow, so I've been thinking of trying my hand at painting it sometime. I saw some tips on other systems but none for the Saturn...? I wish it was just solid black. I've got another modded Saturn that can only do imports and thought about maybe seeing if I could switch the cases, though I guess that one is a model 1.

I've never really done this with consoles though, especially nicely modded ones so it seems risky just dissembling it.

One thing to consider is that you're going to lose the logo when you paint it. You could add them back, but I can't recommend anything.

As far as spraying it black, that's really an easy task. Disassemble the console so you end up with just the plastic case. You might want to tape some things off (stickers on the bottom, the window on the CD lid, etc). Clean the hell out of the console, clean it very well, every crevice, it has to be absolutely clean to get a good paint job. Maybe you might want to soak it in soapy water for a while and then scrub it (not abrasively). You really don't have to sand it, just make sure it's super clean. And make sure what ever you clean it with didn't leave a residue on the plastic.

Do not use gloss because that will just look like shit. The satin black will give it a look just like a real black Saturn. Spray nice even coats, and make sure you hit all the cracks and crevices. One coat might be enough, this paint is awesome.

After you spray it, you could just leave it as is (but make sure to let it fully cure so you don't end up chipping it) or if you want to add the logos back, do it now. If you add back the logos, then you're probably gonna wanna spray a clear coat over it. Again, nothing glossy. Get a matte clear coat. But if you're not gonna add back logos, then I would suggest the clear coat. As long as you let the Krylon Fusion fully cure (at LEAST a week) then it should be good.

This video demonstration (done on a Genesis and a controller) might help you to go about doing it:

What a maneuver!
