Re: Sega CD "Hidden Gems"
"keep this list on the semi-newbie level"
"I’m hoping that the more experienced retro gamers will be able to pick a small handful of games from the list that they haven’t played much"
doing both of these will be difficult with the sega cd. if you keep it on the newbie level the games are going to be the ones already mentioned: lords of thunder, sonic cd, and i forget what everybody else has mentioned. but with this list i don't think experienced retro gamers are going to learn anything new.

I always thought Ecco I & Ecco II on the Sega CD was great. The tranquil, soothing music just turned it into a different experience for me when playing it a second time.

I've been lurking this thread awhile and finally, thank you, thank you, thank you, someone mentions FMV. I think (whether they're actual gems or maybe more similar to the way even a petrified turd with enough time can turn into a diamond) that Sega CD's FMV games are so over looked and even under appreciated. Digital Pictures has a whole library of titles on the system, with terrible acting from Z list celebs, video from the 80's that didn't get used until the early 90's, and just awful game design.Opa Opa wrote:There's a whole world of fmv games to be explored.final fight cd wrote:but with this list, i don't think experienced retro gamers are going to learn anything new.
So IMHO the better hidden gems list (though its probably about 3 deep) is "The Best FMV Games". There was a time when Tom Cat Alley had the biggest budget for a video game ever. And Night Trap created Sega's need for a rating system, which in turn became the ESRB. And Double Switch single-handedly ruined Corey Haim's career, thus throwing him into a downward spiral until his suicide last year.

I loved Microcosm when it first came out. I've always had a fascination with the workings of the human body. And in the early 90s it didn't get much better than Microcosm for a guy like me.Cronson wrote:I've been lurking this thread awhile and finally, thank you, thank you, thank you, someone mentions FMV. Re: Sega CD "Hidden Gems"
i am not a big fan of FMV. i have popped a few in just to see what they were about but quickly turned them off. i have finished road avenger, though. so, yes, i would learn something new reading about FMV hidden gems. and i know i am not the only one that has steered clear of them.

Re: Sega CD "Hidden Gems"
Sounds like the article should be "The Most Notorious Sega CD Games". Now there's an article I really want to read.Cronson wrote: So IMHO the better hidden gems list (though its probably about 3 deep) is "The Best FMV Games". The Mis-Adventures of Flink
Very Mario-style platformer, with a story and characters strangely similar to Harry Potter.
But the graphics. Oh my dear, the graphics. This game is absolutely drop-dead gorgeous. I don't think I'm exaggerating at all when I say this is the best looking Sega CD or Genesis game. In fact, it holds up pretty well with the 2D high definition games being made today. And no one has played it. This is the kind of game for which "Hidden Gems" articles were invented.

Flink has great graphics (Psygnosis developed it) but the MegaDrive version has awful music. I found it to be a pretty standard platformer.
