Sega themselves have made it quite clear and to the point that they are a software manufacturer only. We all want a new Sega console, but spreading rumors doesn't help that any.
It's a pipe dream, sure, but it's a pipe dream I don't want to let die. There's always a teeny tiny glimmer of hope......I hope. I want my nineties-era Sega back!

The title on this thread is very misleading... Maybe a ? should be added to it.
Thanks everyone...

They're still making hardware.

The only thing that's really keeping Sega from making a triumphant return to the console market, is that it's just so dam expensive to get something like that started. And I bet they're a little more then worried about trying to enter a market that's got Nintendo, Microsoft, and Sony at the top.

I agree with all that. But there's more to it than just that. Sega is also not the same company it was. Sega is now Sega Sammy, and is essentially owned by the Sammy Corporation. They aren't the same company that was making Master System, Genesis, Sega CD, Saturn, and Dreamcast. I've heard that there is still a few Sega hold-overs, like the ever-talented Yu Suzuki, but most of the people that were Sega aren't there anymore. And with a change of people, inevitably comes a change of focus.

I've been reading idle speculation of how Sega is about to return to the console business ever since the Dreamcast failed. Face it, Sega failed in the console business. Even if they did create a new console, their past would catch up with them and they would fail again. Its not going to happen.

People seem to forget that Sega hasn't been successful at consoles since the Genesis. That's not a favorable track record.

I think it's fair to say that all of Sega's post-Genesis consoles were released under fairly extenuating circumstances. Plus business is boring, you're better off not thinking about it.

People also seem to get grumpy every time the possibility of Sega returning to form is discussed. But I guess that's to be expected, it has come up an awful lot.

I can only speak for myself, but its nice to fantasize, even knowing full well that it will never happen. I've never known anyone who hasn't dreamed about flying, for instance.

I'll tell you one thing though. If I ever camped out for anything anticipating its release, it'd be a new Sega console. Just being honest.
