SNES repro controller + Game Boy Player related question

Post by toadhall »

Hi guys! I've been lurking for a while now but I finally seem to have some burning questions that I want answered. If you could kindly oblige? :D

So I've recently scored a GameCube in good condition at a very cheap price. I didn't really want it since I have a Wii, but it kind of came free with the WaveBird I bought  So now to justify having the GameCube in the house, I ordered a Game Boy Player and I am now waiting for it to arrive to enjoy some awesome GBA sweetness on my TV.

So my questions:

1) I notice that the racketboy store has repro SNES controllers on sale? Are these recommended? How do they compare to the original Nintendo-made controllers? I was thinking of getting them and the converters from RetroUSB for use with the GB Player. For that matter, how are the NES repro controllers? (I've always wanted to get a bone controller!)

2) So playing GBA games on a GB Player with a GameCube controller, where would the select button remap to? The Z button? How does this affect playing on a SNES controller via the RetroUSB converters?

Thanks for your time!

1. I've heard the clones are just as good, though I've never used one personally.

2. Yes, the select is mapped to Z. Which means on an actual SNES controller, there's no Select (I think? Right? Because there's no Z -- I think SatoshiMatrix just said that on his blog actually).

3. Have you seen the Hori SNES Super GB controller that's on my FS/FT list?

4. Nice blog!

I was wondering if you'd be the one to answer first, noiseredux! :D

Hmm. So the clone controllers should be as good, eh. I guess I'll have to think some more about it. Googling them doesn't seem to bring up much first-hand impressions.

I did consider your Hori pad, in fact it was the first thing my eyes gravitated to! Unfortunately the placing of the L and R buttons seem slightly weird to me. Those can't be comfortable on certain games (Castlevania: HoD and F-zero Maximum Velocity come to mind). Sorry but I'll have to pass on that one.

Thanks for the kind words about my blog. Nothing substantial there at the moment but I will try to update it semi-frequently throughout the next few weeks. Was kinda inspired by your blog and lisalover1's actually and together with me obtaining a GameCube plus recently stumbling upon my collection of EGMs from the period of the GameCube US launch stirred some lovely retro-related memories which I intend to put down to word when I have time.

Oh thank you very much! Just want I wanted to read. Funny how I didn't find that thread in my searches before. Looks like I will be going for those clone pads after all. I guess it won't hurt to try. Well, except my wallet that is.

If you and lisalover's blogs are "sister-blogs" I guess mine can be the distant cousin blog!
