Best Japan/Europe exclusive Mega-CD games?

Post by Satoshi_Matrix »

I just finished my detailed review of Time Gal for Sega CD and I got to thinking of games that I might have missed out on due to regional markets.

Are there any Japanese or European exclusive Mega-CD games that are worth playing? I've heard great things about the Urusei Yatsura game and wanted to know what else is out there for someone who can read/speak Japanese.

By the way, here's the link to my Time Gal review:

Here's a few;

Annet Futatabi - sequel to Megadrive brawler El Viento, this side-scroller is pretty fun.

Cyborg 009 - fun run & gun game based on the popular manga.

Devastator - another good run & gun, with mechas.

Earnest Evans - by the same team behind Annet Futatabi & El Viento (Wolf Team), Earnest Evans is more of an action/platformer, and while it's not a very good game, it's notable for the bizarre animation technique where each body part is animated separately. The results are often hilarious.

Heavy Nova - although this game released on the Megadrive/Genesis in the west, it was only available for Mega CD in Japan. It's a rather clunky game that switches between side-scrolling beat 'em up and 1-on-1 fighting.

Heroic Legend of Arslan - pretty basic strategy RPG based on the popular anime, heavy on the Japanese text unfortunately.

The Ninja Warriors - fun side scrolling beat 'em up. This one also has English, but bizarrely was only ever released in Japan for the Mega CD.

Nostalgia 1907 - adventure game with a really wonderful and unique setting and style. Unfortunately, Japanese skills are most definitely required and I've found no English walkthrough on the net, which is a real shame as I love the look of the game. Guess I need to learn Japanese.

Ranma 1/2 - visual novel with turn-based RPG battles. Again, Japanese literacy required to understand what the hell is going on.

Sengoku - fun SNK side-scrolling beat 'em up. Far superior to the awful WTF SNES version, but not as good as the NeoGeo original.

Shin Megami Tensei - great RPG, but again very heavy on the Japanese.

Shadowrun - far superior to the plain Megadrive version, for some bizarre reason the Mega CD version only saw release in Japan. Bastards.

The Smurfs - colourful and fun little platformer, also the first EU exclusive game on my list!

Syndicate - superior port of this PC classic that was only released in the EU.

Theme Park - EU exclusive again, pretty competent port.

Here is a list of all EU Mega CD releases

And here is the list of all EU 32X CD releases

compare with your list of NA releases and then google those games to find out if they are any good.

Yeah I know it's a pain.

The only 3 non-US 32X games are Fifa 96 (EU), Darxide (EU), and Romance of the Three Kingdoms IV (JPN).
