Strange error message on Genesis game
I was playing the original NBA Jam on Genesis and in the middle of game the screen went black and an error message appeared in white text. It said something along the lines of an illegal debug message or code by Iguana and a bunch of numbers and letters underneath that? I don't remember exactly what the message said, sorry. Anyone ever have this happen to them? Is there some kind of defect with this game? Should I get another copy of the game? Very strange, I have NEVER seen this kind of thing before with any of my cart games. Thanks!
I am addicted to video games, especially retro gaming from my era. I have: NES, SNES, Nintendo 64, Gamecube, Gameboy, GBA, Wii, Sega Genesis, Sega CD, Dreamcast, PS1, PS2, Xbox, and Xbox 360. I have probably over 1,000 games in total for all these systems combined. Yes, I need help and I wouldn't have it any other way! This is my passion and hey my wife still loves me!!

I have never heard of that ever. Did you happen to snap a picture of it? Try to recreate what kind of game you played etc and see if it happens again, then document it.Evildeadmanwalking77 wrote:I was playing the original NBA Jam on Genesis and in the middle of game the screen went black and an error message appeared in white text. This. My copy of Sonic 3D Blast used to take me to the "secret level select" screen at random points during gameplay until I gave it a good cleaning.Hatta wrote:Probably just a flakey connection.

Seems like a cart reading error. Thats the messages that played when you turned on the game right?

Re: Strange error message on Genesis game
No, this message appeared while I was in the middle of playing the game and I wasn't using a game genie or any type of codes. I played it again last night and it didn't happen so maybe I just need to clean the game? It was just weird because it mentioned the company Iguana. If it happens again I will get a pic to display to show you guys or least copy exactly what the message said. Like I said, I have never seen anything like it before.

Re: Strange error message on Genesis game
My copy used to do that if you gave the Sega logo on the model 2 mega drive a light thump. I did this a lot as a kid. Needless to say, my copy of Sonic 3D isnt very healthy anymore, although my Mega Drive seems to be fineflamepanther wrote:This. I have always had a lot of luck with tricky games when I clean them. Amazing sometimes how just a bit of dust/dirt can effect gameplay.
Maybe if I clean my Sonic game Labyrinth Zone will stop popping up? What an annoying error!

Another vote for dirty contacts causing the game to glitch and dump you in some leftover debug code that shouldn't be accessible. See this somewhat related and potentially damaging article.
