Happy New Ye........YLOD...EDIT 1 month later again

Post by d123456 »

what happened?
So on 1-1-2011 me and my daughter played Sonic all stars racing.
Then the screen went black, right then and there I knew it was a ylod. (FUUUK, I thought...)
I told her right up, it's broken.

what I did
So then I thought: let's go the internets to see what can be done.
-oven method
-hairblower method
-reflow method
-reballing method (supposedly the best becuse it takes the chip out and solders it in again...)

I found a small repair shop that say they do reballing in Berlin. I did that and they replaced the fan as well. swapped in a newer type fan which is supposed to be quiter. hmm, doesn't sound different at all. 60 euro for reball and 30 euro for new fan.
It's working again :)
But for how long?
When I went to store the first time, he told me that these fixes are permanent. it will 'die' again at some point. I've got 4 weeks guarantee. if it break again he will fix it for free. beyond that I'm on my own.
On the phone he told me the repair went well and it should be fine for a while.

my ps3
The ps3 is in almost every day use. 60 fat Japanese backward compatible

Advise:
it seems that all ps3 can ylod at any time.
Please make a backup of your game saves. ps2 games, ps3 games. just in case. it'll just take a minute.
I wanted to do a complete back up of the entire system, but that failed 5 times. some weird error. your game saves are most valuable.
ylod it happens, by not thinking about it the threat will not go away.
EDIT: and offcourse backup all of your accounts and passwords, just to be save.

how the ylod happened?
pressed pause in mid 2 player split screen race and went to XMB. 5 second later it was too much for my ps3. So eh.. like never do that!

A bit late to report to you guys, but now you have the full story.
I will report back when it breaks again......which I hope is never.
I need bc, because a ps2 will have controller cords and the pq is not hdmi.
what will I do in the future? all bc ps3's will break at some point due to a manufacterer design mistake.

Well if you want to get technical, ALL hardware will eventually break at some point.

Y'know a lot of people who are outside of the Sony warranty try 3rd party companies. Some have success, some not. I still would rather send it to Sony than anyone because if it dies again rather soon, Sony's warranty after repair is longer than most 3rd parties AFAIK. Good luck & sorry to hear about the system.

Same thing happened to me recently on my US 60GB. I was playing MW2 online and it shut down with the red lights blinking. The next day I used it, it shut down again and entered YLOD-state. I didn't back-up my saves, but I uploaded a lot of my saves to Gamefaqs so at least I can download and get some of them back. Still waiting for the shipping box from Sony.

I'm thinking of eventually getting a new slim PS3 and just playing PS2 games on a PS2. I would hate to go through this again.

If mine were to YLOD I'd just do the slim+ps2 route as well. Would probably be cheaper than buying another working 60gb model.

so uhmm, yeah....
It died again.
I was playing the 9th of February. Roughly one month later. About 40 hours of play (rough estimate) after the last fix.
fuuuuk!
I played only for 1 hour. Samurai Showdown PS2 (that last one) and after that I did a copy of some PS2 memory card data and WHOOF, gone.
I went back and the guy said this: "About 2 out of 10 ps3 have real issues with the processor, you seem to be that ´lucky´ person..."
He said he would try to fix it again, but that after that it would last for a very short time.
ylod is REAL! It´s not a hoax. And I am someone who is very carefull with his stuff.
When it dies again I am getting a ps2 with HD loader and I am never buying a retail game ever again. it´s going to be illegal downloads only.
It´s with the repair service now. He´s giving me a call when it´s done.
All I really want is a PS1 and PS2 with HDMI and wireless dualshocks anyway.
Perhaps he cannot fix it again and it´s dead, who knows. I´ll keep you guys updated.
On the other hand I played it alot. So it´s still good value, but the thing is. If I get another Japanese PS3 with bc it will also die at some point. I guess I am in the market for a new sealed Japanese bc PS3. bejesus, how much will that cost me huh?

I suggest going for the slim. They use a lot less power so I think they'll be more reliable in the long run.

Yeah, I paid extra for mine to get a slim, so that I wouldn't have to deal with YLOD. I had had enough of RROD at that point, didn't want to risk it.
