As far as my Splitter, I bought it at walmart for $20. It can only split one type of video connection at a time (All S-video or All Composite). As with all splitters, there is always a loss of quality, but none that can be seen with the naked eye if it isn't complete garbage.

If splitting component, I would recommend something a bit higher end.

As far as TVs go I recommend Sony Trintrons. The one I have has 3 svideo/composite inputs (one at the front), two component, 1 HDMI, and of course RF.

Someone say cable hell?

I have a tangled octopus family myself, four switch boxes, all consoles hooked up

Why can't you have both S-Video and Composite working on your switchbox? I have NES at Composite and PSX, N64 and Dreamcast at S-Video all routed to a four select box. Both type cables going to the HD which senses which signal. The Dreamcast is going to get that VGA upgrade once I set up the VGA to HDMI adaptor I bought recently. It means another cable going from the couch table over to the screen.
Just doesn't allow it. Not like it matters since the only thing I have split between it is SNES/Saturn

Some switchboxes just don't let you do more than 1, even if it has the inputs/outputs for it.
Its the reason I have a $20 rca->svideo "converter" hooked up to my nes.

Maybe the good auto switching ones support it, but I have had nothing but issues with them both for rca/svideo and my scart one.

The rca would just not switch most of the time, and the scart would kind of half power my snes up even when another system was switch on, it was wierd. System would be off but light would be glowing.

Are the pelican ones decent at all?

I have a Pelican/Gamestop, two boxes for Component and one for SVideo/Composite. Sometimes I do have to mash that select button to get a full contact. Of note is the combo SVideo/Composite box which supports both connections. NES Composite is port 1, the other three are N64, Dreamcast and PSX at SVideo. I also run a Mechanical DVI/HDMI switchbox, lucky to find that for my older DVI HD CRT.

BTW, it's my understanding that composite and s-video av cables for the ps1, ps2, and ps3 are all interchangeable, like it is with the SNES/N64/GC. But can the ps1 use the ps3's component cables? I'm using a model SCPH-9001, if that matters.

PS1 won't work with the component cable. Even though it is the same connector, PS1 won't output component.

That's what I figured, but I thought I'd double-check.

And speaking of SNES/N64/GC s-video cables, I'm finding it difficult to track down some good Nintendo-brand ones. And there are so many third-party versions. Which ones are good ones?

I have the monster ones found here.

they are pretty heavy but work great. I don't see a mesh screen on my TV, which is a common problem with bad quality s-video cables for the N64.

I have that cable as well and it works great. I also have the PS2 version. The GC one was received in a trade so the PS2 ones purchased new back in the day were my only "paying too much for Monster cables" adventure before I knew better.

Yeah I have the PS2 one as well, and my only complaints are they are almost impossible to get in 100% and heavy, so you will have to secure them
