I've had bad experiences with gamestop in the past that cost me money and I'm afraid they'll do the same with my pre-order. And I'm not even sure if I'll have (at the most) $250 by then, although I have $70 saved up already and I'm hoping gamestop will have some deal that when you trade in your old DSi you get 100$ discount on the 3DS.

So do you think I should pre-order it and do you think they'll have that discount I'm hoping for? :|

I'm debating whether to preorder one and then flip it on ebay/craigslist. Did the original NDS ever experience a shortage and have high prices? Or was it only for the Wii?

Down the road, I'll want to get a 3DS but I already have a large back catalog to play on my XL/Wii/PS3. I probably should just forget about it and just hold onto my money.

The DS Phat was impossible to find until late 2005 to early 2006 right before the DS Lite came out.

I remember being 12 years old in mid-2004 and telling my mom that I wanted one for X-Mas then explaining the best way to get it would be to pre-order it. Her, always being the slightly untrusting type and refusing to learn how pre-orders worked just said "It's all lies there's always plenty of those stupid things to go around". Just like every good lazy parent nearing the holidays.....

Cut to a few months later in late November '04..........it's sold out EVERYWHERE. She's panicking and telling me that there's no way I could have known it would sell out, blah blah lazy parental excuses, etc...

She ended up as I found out a few years later on buying it via eBay for a double the price markup of $300 compared to the then launch price of $150 because of her mistake. (No wonder I only got it and SM64DS plus some clothes that year)

The moral of the story is, don't be dumb. Pre-orders are always cancel-able and you'll always get your money back. If you have a passing interest in buying one of these within the next 12-24 months then just go and plunk at least the minimum $50 investment down. It's not an incredibly large sum of cash and you make sure to get in on the pre-order list before they run out of the first allocation and you're simply told no or refunded your money thanks to doing it too late.

As more details emerge in the next two months you can weigh your decision on whether to keep that pre-order or drop it and just wait for more stuff to show up on the platform.

If you decide to keep it then you've already got $50 paid off of the machine, or if you change your mind and cancel then voila. that's an instant $50 + whatever more you put down on it back in your pocket.

What happened to you?

There's several ways to track how your pre-orders are being tallied and even more so now with the Power-UP cards which keep a live record you can access 24/7 online of all your purchases and pre-orders.

Other tips include keeping all your pre-order receipts stapled together, making sure to check in on your stuff in the store weekly even if you haven't added any money to it, and if something ever occurs such as a pre-order you didn't cancel just disappearing instantly call GS customer service and also demand the number to the district manager from the store's manager on duty.

I completely remember the shortage of Nintendo DSs around. I got lucky and bought the last one in the city and all its malls. Thank god for K B Toys lmao.

Hm. You guys think I'll be able to make a profit by buying 3DSs in Europe and selling them to Americans?

I don't remember there ever being console shortages here, with the exception of Christmas 2 years ago.

http://aussie-gamer.com/rumor-nintendo- ... ice-outed/
It wouldn’t be New Years Eve without the obligatory mass hysteria, and this year is no different. Nintendo 3DS fever has gripped the internet and now two more internet based rumors have surfaced which hint at the US release date and price for the console.

The first one comes from “Nintendo3DSBlog“. One of their YouTube subscribers claims he got in touch with a “Nintendo Employee” who told him that the Nintendo 3DS will be released in Japan on February 26, a fact Nintendo Japan confirmed in September. He claims he was then told that the console will be released worldwide “one month later”.

This puts the console’s American release date on March 20 (since it is the Sunday), four days earlier than the latest Australian release date rumor. It should be noted that both the Australian and this rumor originated on the same website. The mystery employee also revealed, according to the subscriber that the company are still working out the price for the console, giving a range from as low as US$150 but will be no higher than US$270.

Another member of the same website posted that his job has given him the confirmation that the 3DS will officially run for $269.99 when it hits North America in March. The poster states that he could “lose his job” for releasing such sensitive information. Of course, since neither poster has shown any proof of their claims, we’re talking this one with a grain of salt.

If you need to get one after they have released and dont have a preorder you can do what I did for Wiis that I sold:
Go to a Gamestop that has a manager you are nice with/have a relationship with and offer to drop x amount on preorders for upcoming titles if they hold y from the next shipment.
X being whatever seems fair, Y being the amount of consoles.

I use to go drop $50 on preorders to get a Wii, turn around and sell it for $100 to 150 profit. Then cancel the preorders and replace half of them in the managers name or wait until the game comes out and cancel them. Its probably against some ethics code but ti seemed to work.

The only issue is you can't do that anymore.

The entire company completely changed how inventory was handled back in October when the Power-Up card launched.

100% of your pre-orders are tracked via the system just like always, BUT you can now be blacklisted. This happens after you've done what you're talking about. Every single pre-order is logged and tracked because they directly affect the inventory received by each store.

Basically the computer tracks to see who's pre-orders are being made and canceled via the name and phone number associated with the account. It also still tracks you via the name on the customer ID, your debit or credit cards, the RFID tag in your power up rewards card if you're in a store that has those tap and go card readers, etc.....

If the system detects any of these things it will instantly lock down on both you and the employee. Not to mention employee transactions are monitored like you wouldn't believe. Employee number, debit cards, names and phone numbers, detecting the amount of cash being handled given each transaction and the items sold, pre-orders made etc....

...What? I was given a DS Phat in August of 2005. My mother didn't have any trouble getting the DS, either.
