can a gen 2 sega saturn power supply work in a gen 1 saturn?

Post by buick »

Hey,

so i worked on my saturn, alcoholed it up inside, worked better than ever...

now back again to same problem as before... :(

my friend has a dodgy sega gen 2 which has disc read problems (mines a gen 1) and I was wondering if a gen 2 power supply would fit in my gen 1? im pretty sure my problem is the power supply...

btw is there like an electrical contact spray or something that would work better then the rubbing alcohol's temporary fix?

thanks, I appreciate all the help I will receive from you guys!

I'm pretty sure they are the same. It's not like the different model variations like the Genesis. I'm pretty sure the Saturn just uses a standard polarized power cord like the Dreamcast or Phat PS2 does.

I assume you mean model 2 Sega Genesis? How does a Genesis have disc read problems? It uses cartridges. Did you mean a model 2 Sega CD? Also, what is "mines a gen 1"? Did you mean "minus a model 1 Genesis" or "mine is (mine's) a model 1 Genesis"?

This is not the first time your posts have been unspecific, vague and confusing. Why don't you post EXACTLY what you are dealing with so that the guess work is left out? It is hard to help you when you are not specific and misuse grammar/spelling to the point where your original thoughts are unclear.

A model 2 Genesis power supply does NOT work with a model 1 Genesis. You should be checking the power requirements for the specific model of Genesis you are using and match it up to the specs on the power supply.

i dont need just the chord, apparently the sega has the internal as system and just used a regular polarized plug?

its the internal power supply, has the power button wire running to it (i beleive a 2 port quick connect) and it runs into the main motherboard or whatever its called which i beleive is either a 4 or 5 port quick connect connection ......

apparently i found one online for sale, but they say it is for a 32 pin system, which is a gen 2...
was hoping a gen 2 and 1 would swap in the same?

The title says 'can a gen 2 sega saturn power supply work in a gen 1 saturn?' I'd assume thats what he means.

I'd rather not assume.

Is he talking about a Genesis or a Saturn? Does "gen 2" mean "Genesis model 2"? Yeah, I can guess, but he really needs to be clear on what he is talking about. I do not want to guess.

The model 1 and 2 Sega Genesis systems use different power supplies.

Sega Saturns do not use a power supply, since it is built in to the unit. They just use a standard power cord. You can use a cord from an old stereo if it will fit into the port on the Saturn and it should work fine.

I really am trying to help you out.

When you say "gen", do you mean "generation"? Usually, we go by "model 1"/"model 2". If you use "gen" when talking about Sega, it is VERY easy to confuse it with "Genesis", which is the North American name for the Mega Drive. It is best not to use short forms for words when new somewhere, especially since you yourself said that you are new to the "lingo".

I am glad that you are getting help here. That's great! I'm trying to additionally help you by asking you to be specific in your questions and leave the guesswork out. This will help avoid any confusion.

If I put "Sega Saturn power supply" into google images, many different things come up. That does not give me a clear picture of what you specifically want. As mentioned, the power supply unit for any model of Saturn is located inside the console. The only thing you generally need to deal with is the power cord. As long as it will fit into the system, it should work. It does not matter if you are using a power cord from a model 1 Saturn, a model 2, a 3DO, a Dreamcast, a stereo or a toaster. It is just a cord. If the connection is the same, it will work as long as there is power coming from the outlet, the power coming from the outlet matches the amount of power required by the console, and the console is not damaged. If the power supply INSIDE the console really is damaged, you might be best off to buy another Saturn.

Hopefully that answers your question in full.

You're right, gen1 model 1 I guess I shoulda said I own a model 1. Anyways, I'm writing from an iPhone(which sucks). I have the opportunity of getting a model 2 Saturn from a friend for free, which has it's own problems. My internal power supply is messed, and I was hoping to take the one from the model 2 and put it in my model 1. Didn't think it would work though.

I do not know how they are connected internally. Most likely, the motherboards are created to work specifically with a certain PSU (power supply unit). They might just be connected through a cable, or they might actually be soldered in. In other words, it might be way more trouble than it is worth to switch them, it not impossible!

I actually recommend getting a new Saturn for yourself that is in full working order.
