Best Sega CD Variant?

Post by the7k »

I've gotta friend who is returning a favor by allowing me to have any of his Sega CD's that he has accumulated. I'm leaning towards either the Model 2 version or the CDX...

But I would like to know if there is any reason I should choose one over the other, like there is with the various builds of the 3DO. Any knowledge about issues or advantages with other models that might be helpful to others are welcome as well.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

all I've owned is a cdx, so thats what I recommend.

do you really want to have two a/c adapters plugged in at all times?

and you need that special cable for audio.

the cdx is nice to look at as well

There aren't really any major advantages to any particular SCD Model, it's just more so what you want your setup to look like, and what other Sega hardware you have.

The Model 1 SCD matches the Model 1 Genesis, and uses belts to operate the CD tray, which do wear out.

The Model 2 SCD uses a CD door instead of a tray, but has a tendency to blow a small fuse on the motherboard, and depending on the age of the unit, may not be replaceable, at least not easily.

The CDX works very well, but if you have, or want to have a 32X, you can't really use it with the CDX.

Personally, I would recommend the Model 2, its styling works with the Genesis Model 2, which I prefer, and the 32X, and I like the CD door style.

Technically though, there is no real comparable difference, no model will out perform another.

The CDX is compatible with the 32x.

The CDX is pretty rare. I'd take that one

If you like your consoles large and in charge, I recommend the pioneer laser active. It is a laser disc player with a pac for the sega genesis. Plays both cartridge genesis and sega cd games.

now that were on the subject, he may need the metal plate that goes in between the genesis and the sega cd unit right?

does having that or not having it affect the system in any way?

just thought about throwing that in this conversation! :?

Far as I know that metal plate doesn't really matter.

CDX is awesome for extreme space saving. It's an incredible sight to see that small! Yet harder to region mod or use addons like 32X with.

No, not at all. The only reason it exists is to conform with US electronics safety standards. RF shielding I guess? Something like that. It's functionally useless. Much like how the only reason the TG-16 had to be so large was to conform with US standards.
