Hey,
very new to the board, just bought a gen 1 sega cd
problem is, it doesnt work! lol
it loads up says sega cd etc, but the sega cd discs I have (which look brand new, and are original copies) skip and I cant play the console......
So, i took it apart, cleaned the lens (maybe too much alcohol) and let it dry.....same result...maybe gets 7 seconds into the game load screen then skips, you hear the same sound over and over again...(cd does spin etc., tray loads everything powers up...)...even when i try to play brand new unburnt music cd's, it skips through then hard!...
Somebody mentioned something about the optical block possibly being out a alignment, how would I adjust it..???
It seems strange as the games i use are MINT and i just dont know why it wont work?
ANy and all help is appreciated!
thank you very much!
Sega cd gen 1 help! Doesnt read discs??

I would say that the laser would be off alignment too, Your best bet would be to get a new one.
I am so lucky that my cdx doesn't have that problem

It's up to you, you can go get it repaired at a local shop.
You could go to any place that fixes CD players.

Ok, you cleaned the unit. Step 1 completed.
Now Try cleaning the connection between it and the Genesis. Use a very thin piece of paperboard from a cereal box, fold it in half and wrap it in a paper towel. dab it with rubbing alcohol and gently insert and remove it a few times from the Sega CD's interface connector.
Next take a Q-Tip that is moistened with rubbing alcohol and clean the Genesis' expansion port connector.
Finally reconnect the two units and see what the end result is. If it works then awesome, you're done. If it doesn't then we're back to step one and you have a few options:
Something may be improperly connected inside.
Your laser may need to be realigned.
Your laser may need it's power adjusted.
