Will the saturn keep it's saves as long as it is plugged in?

Post by CantStrafeRight »

I got myself a Saturn for Christmas and I've discovered it's battery is flat.

If I turn it off it forgets the time so I've been leaving it on in case I lose my saves.

Does any one know if I leave it plugged in but turned off will that keep its saves or should I leave it on all the time until I get a new battery.

I really dont want to lose my Sakura Wars save.

You will lose your Sakura Wars save, without a doubt. The only way to avoid it would be to buy a memory cartridge and keep the Saturn powered on, with Sakura Wars running, until then. If you reset the system to load a different game, you could very well lose your save. How many days or weeks to you want to keep your Saturn running Sakura Wars until you can locate a memory cart and get it in the mail?

I am assuming you got a Japanese Saturn, or you would probably have a 4-in-1 cart you could save games to.

Forget about your saved game. Go down to a grocery store and buy a new battery, then start Sakura Wars again with a fresh battery.

For anyone else reading this, this is a good heads up. If you order a Saturn from Japan, by Japan Post rules, they are not allowed to ship batteries. Technically, any console (like the Saturn) or cartridge is supposed to have their batteries removed. Fucked up? Yes, absolutely, but I was actually told at a post office that they would not let me ship some Famicom games until I had confirmed to them that I took the batteries out of them. I told them, in nice words, to piss off and I went to a different post office that didn't question that sort of thing (even though they are technically supposed to). Anyway, the point is that if you buy a Saturn from Japan, do not count on a battery. You might get one and it might work, or you might get a dead battery or non at all (for the reason above). The seller, if located in Japan, should not be expected to provide a battery due to the silly post office rule. A good idea would be to ask the seller if they are giving you a Saturn with a working battery. If not, then prepare for it.

I agree. You're just gonna have to ditch that save and start over. Do you really wanna be leaving your Saturn on for that long of a period of time?

I decided I would rather lose a couple of hours of Sakura wars rather than a couple of days.

So I just changed the battery and ..... I lost my saves but I can turn the Saturn off now, so its probably better in the long run.

This is true, I was trying to sell an Advent Children PS3 online and I had to take the battery out of the controller, before shipping it. It's a weird law, and I hate it, but always go to a smaller post office where no one seems to care. I shipped two of the pokemon SPs out that way =).

Off topic, but yeah, buy the battery, and if you can, take out the one already in there, so you get the right one. Frying such a good system would be a waste. I had the same dilemma as you, but it was with Grandia, I was about an hour and a half in and I read about constantly inputting the date while taking a break, and became a very sad Panda.

Somehow I missed the second half of your post.

It's a PAL Saturn with an action replay to play imports, but unfortunately when I was 10 years old I pulled the action replay out of my original Saturn when I shouldn't have, and this killed the memory card part. It still works for playing imports and gamecodes but if I try to go into its memory manager it crashes.
