Super Mario Bros. Aracde

Post by daito_kid »

So, I've been reading 'the Ultimate History of Video Games" by Steven L Kent, and I read something interesting. Super Mario Bros, the NES version that was packaged with NES, has an arcade version that it's in Japan, and "did very well in Japanese arcades" ("Ultimate History of Video Games",Kent,pg 300, par. 1).

I can believe this, and it makes sense for why there is a scoreboard, however, I can't find any images except for the Vs. Super Mario brothers. Does anyone have any pics or anything to lead me to this?

Its been awhile since I read it, but I think he is referring to the game Mario Bros.

Mainly because the VS system and the Playchoice 10 system were not released until the late 80s and Mario Bros was released in 83. My VS tent (like the one in the link) is marked either 87 or 89, I cant remember which off hand.

I am pretty sure my red tent is stamped 1985...
However, unlike most arcade cabs every single red tent was made in and imported from Japan, so this may be why the date is so early.

The arcade version is very different in the later levels, but the game is marked 1985 on the PCB and 1986 in the actual roms.

I just played the Super Mario Bros. Arcade last night. It is a bit more difficult than the NES version it seems. They have one set up in the replica Flynn's arcade from Tron at Disneyland California Adventure. They've also got Donkey Kong and the duel screen Punch-Out!!! (yeah, the third exclamation mark is mine)

Ah yes, I played this cabinet once, back in the day.

My dad took me to a local place (that isn't around anymore) that had a huge go kart race track. Like most places of its type, they also had arcade games, and I was very surprised to see this there. I never knew it existed before then, and I've never seen it since.

I did play it, but not long. Watching the videos, I had no idea the levels became so different later on.

Cool to see it again though.
