Fake/Counterfeit NES games?
Fake/Counterfeit NES games?
Has anyone ever come across fake/counterfeit NES games? I bought Castlevania I & II on eBay and they are in suspiciously awesome shape with very minimal signs of wear. What tells me they are legit though is the high quality print on the boxes/carts. Any info is greatly appreciated.

Re: Fake/Counterfeit NES games?
I havent seen any fake nes games, but I have a fake megadrive game and also a counterfit SNES game!
The snes game has a generic sticker on the front, it just doesnt look right, and the warning label that should be a sticker in the back is acually part of the plastic itself
it works okay, but you can tell its a dead giveaway that its a fake!
I have yet to see a fake nes, but maybe you should post some pics so that we can see too!

Open them up to be 100% certain. Aside from early Nintendo games with the adapter in them, legit games will have chips, not glob-top black epoxy covered jobbies. Any fake carts will have really sloppy looking boards inside. I haven't seen any bootlegs that were made close to looking like US releases. Some Brazilian ones I think that used the same shell, but the labels were different. Chinese boots were small and made for the Famicom.

Re: Fake/Counterfeit NES games?
I have to admit i have never heard of fake NES carts before
Re: Fake/Counterfeit NES games?
I'm at work right now but I'll post some pics of the boxes/carts when I get home tonight ( I'll just edit this post)
I'm pretty sure they're real after reading your posts but I'll see if I can open the carts to make sure. The print on the boxes and cart stickers are really bright and nice quality. I tell you it looks like these things have seen minimal use and never even touched for AGES (besides some creasing), but we'll let the pics do the talking
EDIT

I used to have what was obviously a fake Super Mario Brothers 2 cart. no seal of quality, the colors were faded and the sticker on the back had slightly different text. It didnt work, and i wound up selling it to a store and getting like 10 bucks for it.
I have a bootleg Shining Force GBA cart to, but those are far too common

FWIW I've also bought NES games that looked like they were never really played. My Zanac I bought a few years ago was complete down to the baggie. I've had carts that I opened up to clean the pins and had no signs of use.

Some variants of Nintendo-published games like SMB 2, Anticipation and Donkey Kong Classics don't have a Seal of Quality on the label.Pabstblueribbon wrote:I used to have what was obviously a fake Super Mario Brothers 2 cart. no seal of quality

Re: Fake/Counterfeit NES games?
Some official NES carts will have the epoxy chips inside. My Gyromite cart that has the adapter inside, the Gyromite Famicom PCB has epoxy chips on it, like you said. My SMB/Duck Hunt cart has epoxy chips. And sadly, my Famicom Contra cart has epoxy chips in it. I was scared the FC Contra might have been a well made pirate cart (let's face it - pirate FC carts are abundant) but I've confirmed it's official.Hobie-wan wrote:Open them up to be 100% certain. Which is a real shame, because I was gonna put the translated version on that cart but now I can't for obvious reasons.
