Was given a dreamcast! What games should I get?

Post by Satoshi_Matrix »

A really awesome fan of my site http://satoshimatrix.wordpress.com/ recently sent me a Dreamcast and a spindle of burned games (thanks again Zoran)

He included shmups and fighters, the games that really appeal to me. They include:

NESTER DC
Radigly
Chaos Field
Trizeal
Karous
Shikigami no Shiro 2
Zero Gunner 2
Ikaruga
Trigger Heart Exelica
Psyvariar 2
Mars Matrix
Giga Wing 2
Under Defeat
Gunbird 2
Twinlde Star Sprites
Project Justice
Street Fighter III 3rd Strike
Marvel vs Capcom 2
Marvel vs Cacpom 2 Remix
Capcom vs SNK 2
Vampire Chronicles
Super Street Fighter II
Guilty Gear X

So the obvious question is what else should I get? Ive already downloaded obvious choices Sonic Adventure and Soul Calibur, but I don't yet understand how to burn them so they self-boot like all the games I was given. Is there a good tutorial for that somewhere?

Thanks everyone!

Can't go wrong with Power Stone 1 and 2, Cannon Spike is also fun.

Dynamite Cop and Street Fighter Alpha 3 are also worth the time.

Outside of the shumps and fighters.
Shenmue
Sword of the berserk
Half life
Skies of arcadia

As far as burning your own. Just make sure your download is already in CDI format and is already labeled self booting. Use a cd-r and Discjuggler (its a free program).

1) Open up DiscJuggler v3.5

2) In the options menu and in the "Defaults" tab, DISABLE "TAO Write" (DC Backups copy in Disc-At-Once), on "RAW/Read Write", on "Overburn CD" and if you have an old burner like me disable "Burnproof". Keep the CHECK on "Add-Post Gap 3rd Party...".

3) Go to New and select "CD Player to Image".

4) Depending if you CD-ROM is on the list of supported drives (It's in the Help file somewhere...the List of supported CD-ROM drives) then you can use your CD-ROM as the source drive. But, I presume most of you guys here have fast CD-R drives that read CD's at high speed, so use your CD-R drive as the source to make a image file.

5) Put the DC Backup in your CD-R Drive or in your CD-ROM drive....Read step 4

6) Don't change ANYTHING in the "Advance" tab. NO need for "Raw" read!

7) Make sure you have enough hard drive space and then make the image.

Once the image is complete, close this task and go to "File", "New" and select "CD Image to CD Recorder".

9) Open the image file wherever you saved it and put a blank CD in your CD-R drive. By the way, I using Kodak Ultima 80 min Gold + Silver Disc (High Quality)....I suggest using Kodak's or Verbatims, don't use sh!tty Generic CD-R brands.

10) In the "Advanced" tab.....
Boot games (Games that have 1 track and 1 session on the disc). Use these settings:

Mode 1
Offset 0
Block...2048
TOC....CD-ROM

For games that are self-boot (Games that have 2 or 3 sessions on a disc), use these settings:

Mode 2
Offset 0
Block....2336
TOC......CD-XA

11) In the "Advanced" tab, there is NO NEED to enable "Raw Writes" or "Overburn CD". But DO enable "Add-post 3rd..."

12) Start burning. Once it is done you should have a working backup copy.

Check Snesorama forums for the games. They have a great selection.

Snesorama is great, but I suggest getting Dreamcast images ONLY from this dude:

His releases are FAR better than any others. He pays special attention to file order, making your Dreamcast have to work less to read discs, making it quieter and last longer. They're also usually better audio/video quality too, when some kind of compression has to be made. You don't have to worry about making them selfboot, they are already.

As for burning, as joehero said, you can use the trail version of Diskjuggler to burn. You could also use Boot Dreams which is free.

If you're into RPGs at all, the standouts for me were Grandia 2, Elemental Gimmick Gear, and Skies of Arcadia.

Ziggy is correct. He has the BEST images. I couldnt get any copy of sword of the berserk to work past a certain check point. After downloading the image from many places the only one that worked was his.

Congrats man! I loved Tech Romancer, Jojo's Bizarre Adventure and I'll second Skies Of Arcadia as well.
