They could put out some really cool niche games that would normally never survive in todays FPS cookie cutter world. Personally I'd like to see some cool old school 2D or 2.5 action, action RPG and platformers appear on the PS2 or DC from all these small developers.
The thing about the DC that makes it easy to do, is that sega abandoned it, thus creating a small market for indie game producers to creat games for it without having to pay for a liscence from sega, and they don't have to produce them on expencive and rare GDroms, as the DC is fully capabal of playing games on regular cdr's.

Plus the DC is a very open system, and easy to develop for, even without a DC devbox, one can create games on just a regular Dreamcast without much other than a coders cable and kalistOS.
Man, all you Debbie Downers sure know know how to crush a man's dream. For all the doubters of PS2 small house development, I hope to see some cool old school 2D or 2.5 action, action RPG and platformers appear on the DC then. Sometimes, I wish I never sold my DC Dex kit and educated myself how to use it. Or even taught myself how to use kalistOS. So many ideas....

It's ok, the dream still lives on in the Dreamcast though. I wish you wouldn't have sold it either, it is such an awesome machine.

The PS2 does have some homebrew if I am not mistaken, the only thing is that it reaches far fewer people than the Homebrew on Dreamcast does, mainly because you would have to have a modded PS2 in order to play them, whereas a stock DC can play homebrew without ANY modding done to it. Anyone can learn to burn homebrew on the DC with trial and error, but once you have the burning part down, it is like riding a bike, once you know, you never forget. :D

Actually last I heard, Sony had plans to open the PS2 platform to more homebrew as a means to generate continued sales in smaller markets. But I haven't seen any moves in that direction since, so I don't know if that was just hearsay that will never materialize.

Also, while it may seem counter intuitive to release a game for an older console that's considered "dead," it actually makes sense. While the market is small, shmup fans have taken an extreme shine to the Dreamcast in the years following its death, so new shmups released for it tend to sell well, though admittedly they do have smaller print runs. And putting out a new shmup for the DC is a great way to get noticed by the audience they're geared towards, as opposed to X-Box Live, where they may see more sales, but they won't necessarily be remembered. So instead, they release on the DC, and the shmup community pays attention.

Even if it were $5 on XBLA versus $46 on the Dreamcast? I find that to be a tough pill to swallow

then you don't know shmups fans! :)

Personally I'll pay more for a shmup than pretty much any other game genre. Imports, limited editions, cool packaging, etc.
