How To Connect Dreamcast To The Net !

Post by Avanaboy »

Hi , yesterday I have bought a Dreamcast ( it is an NTSC version , but I live to PAL region ) ... I can play fine all PAL games I have ! ;)

Now I just want to try to connect this DC on the net ...
I have 2 Dreamkey discs ( 1.5 and 3.0 ) and I see that there is a modem on the retro of the DC ... what I have to do ? is possible to surf the net with my DC ?

Thank for help ;)

I think it is possible to surf the web on the dreamcast, but the modem on the Dreamcast is for Dial Up connections if I am not mistaken, and Broadband adapters are rather expensive. Also to surf the web I do also believe you need the browser disc, which isn't very hard to find. A local story by me has like 10 copies of the 2 browser discs for like a buck.

If the Dreamkey discs are the PAL region browser discs and you have a dial up connection, you can totally go online with your DC! However, as stated, if you only have broadband, then you'll either have to do some very tricky rigging on your PC (best to search google for these methods) or buy an expensive broadband adapter.

I don't think there are too many websites that you'll be able to access. Is anyone still using a Windows 95 PC to browse the web and can comment on compatibility? It would have to be a rock bottom PC with less than 32MB of memory.

If you have the cash, get the Broadband Adapter. It's worth every penny for web browsing, Phantasy Star Online, and Quake III, in particular, but it has other uses, as well.

In the US if you have DSL through the phone company, they have dial-up service available for free.
So if your internet is through the phone company, it couldn't hurt to contact them.

Long time ago I tried the dial up on Dreamcast. The screens were similar to the old BBS screens, no fluff strictly text screens. I think you are better off stick with the PC. If you want to surf on the big HD screen, a current generation console, laptop or a mac mini plugged in.

56k. I actually went the direct route since I had Dial up at the time. I have read somewhere that it is possible piggybacking thru a PC Ethernet, of course your speed will be limited to the modem of both the DC and PC.

Here is an older post that mentions playing Dreamcast Phantasy Star thru a PC Internet connection.
