Love the idea of a stealth game, but I have yet to see a true stealth game, where the guards will tear you a new one if they catch you. Most of the time, unless there is a limit to triggering the alarm, you can just go right ahead, kill the guards, hide away until things cool down (yes because if you infiltrate a military base, I'm sure they'll stop looking for you, if you hide somewhere for 1 minute).

Of course, there is nothing stopping me from playing a stealth game as stealthy as possible (and in that regard Deus Ex, Splinter Cell and some Assasin's Creed missions are excellent examples of good stealth gameplay).

I just wish to play a stealth game, where you must absolutely avoid fighting the guards. And multiple paths, and excellent level design in general.

BTW every stealth game MUST have a ship stage. The part with the ship in Deus Ex and the ship stage in Splinter Cell Double Agent are sooooooooooo good. Think about it, a ship is the perfect place for a stealth mission. You have a very limited area, so there's no running away, hiding will be hard, and it's an excellent setting for stealth level design as well :D

I personally like them. Its a bit more methodical, as opposed to just running and shooting anything that moves. I havent played the thief series, but I did enjoy SlyCooper, Metal Gear, and Beyond Good and Evil.

I love stealth games as well. I'm still waiting for a real stealth ninja game and more co op games. I like tenchu but the camera is awful and the control is a bit clunky.

Thief - yay
Splinter Cell - Nay
MGS - Yay
Tenchu - Nay

Not sure why some grab me more than others.

if every single enemy in said military base came after you at the sound of one alarm, it wouldn't be fun... if you survived then your mission would be boring afterword. screw up in first five minutes, waste thirty guys, run around kicking down doors and completing objectives unhindered... that's not fun. but really i can't say that for example, MGS AI is any better than Splinter Cell's, they're appropriate for the all around atmosphere and design. a true stealth game, as you put it, would be either a series of mission restarts or wasting everyone (which they already have a genre for). it's all in the thrill, when you actually get your skills down and your weapon/item/gadget application aced. that way, when you do screw up, you can clean up and move on to the rest of the sneaking/assassinating action.

on another note, i think assassin's creed was falsely advertised prior to it's release as an exciting new prince of persia meets stealth game. that series just let me down, i don't really care what is good about it, it could have been the next awesome stealth series, and it's not.

any news on thief 4?

I really loved Metal Gear Solid, but it was mostly for the story line. MGS2 had a ridiculous story imo, and gameplay was just ok. MGS3 sits untouched on my shelf. As for Splinter Cell, Deus Ex, or Tenchu games, I've never bothered to play any of them long enough to really get into them. I've done the tutorial on each, but not gotten much more into it. I keep meaning to revisit the genre though. It's not one that instantly grabs me, but I can see where it would be fun if I would just have a bit more patience with the games.

yeah, patience is key... i just lent SC: Conviction to my shooter-only loving friend and he liked it for a minute or so, then he got sick of having to "do things" ... at least that was last night, maybe if he unlocks more weapons and gets better at using the cover system he'll get into it... but yea, patience. it's a ninja virtue, and honestly, i think every kid born in the 80's is at least a little bit ninja.
