Painting my Dreamcast without ruining it

Post by Incognito D »

I know, I know. We've all seen the destroyed Dreamcasts on here in the past, but the lid of mine in particular has turned a nasty shade of yellow on account of sitting in a shop window for far too long (I bought it pre-owned).
All I want to do, is spray it a nice simple shade of light grey/ white all over (i.e. its original colour). I plan to mask off the controller port area, power button, logo etc and spray the rest. No wacky designs, no bizarre colour combinations, I just don't want it to be yellow.
Any tips? What sort of paint should I be looking for?

Again, I don't even want to do this that much, but the off-yellow colour is horrible.

If you want it the original color, why don't you try cleaning it first. If you don't get it the perfect color, then you have it prepped to be painted. I wonder if the peroxide method would work on a yellowed dreamcast. Gotta find the link of one someone did on a snes here. They soaked the whole thing (removed the electronics first of course) and left it out in the sun and it came out looking like new.

Simply turn the Dreamcast upside down and remove the four phillips screws to pop the cover off. Go the step further and remove the elctricals out of the bottom too. Sand with 320 grit sand paper or a green scotchbrite pad instead if you want to maintain the original dull sheen. Clean with alcohol, then use Krylon Plastic paint sprayed on LIGHTLY.

There are a couple of paint guides:

Ziggy 's Krylon Fusion SNES

For easy to find, maybe these paint guides could be moved to the Guides section?

Whether you paint or Retrobrite the system, you need to disassemble it completely. You won't need to mask the port area because it will come loose.

Yes, definitely break it down as far as it'll go.

I feel your pain. I left my Dreamcast in the sunlight for too long and now the top is yellowed. I was gonna spray it (as close to) the original color, but haven't gotten around to it yet. Nothing crazy, no high gloss or crazy colors, just like you said.

It's really not hard to do, especially if you read all the already posted tips and whatnot. But if you wish, if I get around to spraying mine soon, I could take pics of the process and post it for you.

For spray paint I visited my local B&Q, they had a discounted spray paint bin with loads of Krylon plastic spray paint in, metallic and normal.

£2 a tin instead of the usual £7.

Got a bit carried away and left with 6 different colours and 2 tins of laquer.

keep the spray indoors as I don't think the weather were having helps, ie don't leave the tin in the freezing garage.

There's a couple of DCs I sprayed in this thread.

As already said, take the DC apart for the best results and make sure you cover the two felt pads that the disc sits on.

HTH.

Krylon Fusion is the only thing I would recommend to use. I used it on a SNES in this thread...

I always thought that color would be great to do my Dreamcast with.

Does any body have the image of budsmoka's PS2 handy? Just as an example of what the OP has said he intends to avoid?
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

There's this...

I remember one with an ugly giant pot leaf on the top, but I can't seem to find it.
