 I can't see how this is possible. I though both just short out a couple leads internally, telling the Dreamcast to switch to VGA mode. Does the box work fine on other VGA games?

Yep, I've been running this box for the past two months with not a single hiccup. The back of the packaging on Jojo's Bizarre Adventure seems to indicate the problem. It says 'VGA cord' instead of 'VGA box', like I think my other games say.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

Very bizarre, maybe something to do with the VGA adaptors trying to emulate the 240p mode? Very curious of the internal difference between the box and the cable. I can't see the S-Video/Composite aux output of the box causing it. Something in each convertor's PCB probably.

Maybe switch the VGA off in the box till game loads?

I did find this, but saw no scanlines mode in VGA or SVideo to my HD CRT.

I just learned of this the other day. In Street Fighter 3 Third Strike, you can adjust the resolution options to that of the original arcade. The option below you want to use is "240p mode with scanlines". It is rare when a home console arcade port offers these types of options. Pretty sweet!!!

De-interlaced - After loading the GD-ROM keep pressing the Start button + L button until the Capcom logo appears on the screen. 240p mode with scanlines - After loading the GD-ROM keep pressing the Start button + Y button until the Capcom logo appears on the screen.

Normal screen - After loading the GD-ROM keep pressing the Start button + X button until the Capcom logo appears on the screen.

240p mode for scanlines (flawless) - Hold the Start button + L button until the Capcom logo appears on the screen.

240p mode for scanlines + anti-flicker/sprite filter - Hold the Start button + Y button until the Capcom logo appears on the screen.

480i screen, no scanlines + anti-flicker/sprite filter - Normal Bootup

If you want pixel precise low resolution graphics with scanlines in Street Fighter III Third Strike, you want to use option #1. Do not use option #2 as that retains the image filtering and anti-flicker from the 480i mode rendering the image blurry and out of focus.

I also confirmed that Street Fighter III Double Impact does not have options to bounce the display from its native 240p low resultion up to 480i as I had previously questioned. Which is fine by me as I love 240p with scanlines as it is hehe.

Again these codes will only work on an SDTV.
I also read somewhere that DCX might enable VGA on some games.

Hey for anyone who has a problem with games not being compatible with VGA box, just get what I have. I bought it for playing import dreamcast games. It's simply a disc called DC-X. Came in a DVD case. I'm sure you can find it on eBay. Amazon has a product called Sega Dreamcast Super Game Converter, from innovation. I believe it's basically the same thing. Bust-A-Move 4 wouldn't work on VGA, then I used my dc-x disc, and it worked just fine. VGA looks great on my plasma. I just hate the grey side bars my tv has in 4:3, so I have have my DC hooked up to my Sony 32 HDCRT with S video.
