Sonic games weren't always about speed. Sure, there were moments but there was always the most important aspect of all, exploration. Also, actually using skill to avoid traps and accessing secrets. When I was a kid, I would always enjoy exploring every nook and cranny of Emerald Hill (though getting the hell out of Metropolis, I still have that level) and taking my time and having fun with each level.

This is funny. It's like this one saying of how Sonic fans say they want the same old Sonic and the Nintendo fans wanting Mario to do something difference for once.
What a maneuver!

Picked up my pre-order from GS -- no Sonic fan should be without the hat :P

The cover is also great, sporting some niffty, reflective colors (difficult to capture on my cellphone's cam).

Put in a couple hours into the Wii version, which I'm happy to say is a definite boost in the Sonic franchise. The opening intro and START screen demonstrates the love I feel Sonic Team has poured into this project. There are a couple notable items I feel that keep this Sonic from being the game Sonic fans yearn for:

a) There's no Spin Dash in the Wii version (unless I missed that part in the tutorial).

b) Camera is pulled TOO far out during the 2D portions of the game. It's almost difficult to pin-point Sonic. Platforming isn't like the 16-bit versions we love; controls feel a little "choppy" from the initial button press to actual actions being performed on-screen.

The DS version feels more like what Sonic 4 should have been. I've just played through the first act, and I love it (more so than the Wii). Not only was the music intact from the console version, but the controls feel more natural! Even with the homing, it feels like you can get a nice rhythm going. Explorations is definitely an option, levels seem larger vertically.

If you guys have a chance, be sure to check this game out. It may not please everyone, but it definitely has with this Sonic fan.

I gave in and picked it up since Target was offering a $10 gift card with purchase.

Too much sidescrolling. And it's 3D sonic engine sidescrolling meaning if you didn't like the crappy physics from Sonic 4 you won't be happy with these. But the fact that it doesn't try to be like the old sonic games makes it more livable. The 3D sections that I've seen so far are too automated but have found ways to make it interesting without too much player input. Like a part where you run along a road and motorcycle/bug type robots are driving around you. You can push left or right to switch onto their path then dash into them or jump on them. The game is definitely a step forward from recent 3D sonic games like black knight, Sonic 360, or Unleashed.

I still wish they'd just make a good 3D platforming game that plays like a sped up mario though, since that's really what sonic was back in the day. But if you want a 3D sonic game this is pretty fun.

I don't know what's going on with Sonic's voice though. It sounds like a ninja turtle or something. Tails' voice is finally acceptable though. But sonic seems less cool and they've kinda ramped up the "humor". Didn't take long for me to start skipping the cut scenes.

They need to bring back Jaleel White for the voice.

How can there be too much sidescrolling?

When the sidescrolling parts don't control that well and the automated loop running isn't half as exciting when you're not running into the screen.

I've been playing the Aussie version on the Wii since Saturday, and I'm downright amazed at the sheer quality and fun of it. You guys are too picky!

I just played the sweet mountain level, which I personally thought was kind of a lame sounding level, but it's actually one of the best so far.

If they zoomed the camera in a bit more during the sidescrolling parts and tightened the control up a bit, and reduced some of the "watch sonic run" segments (the first act of starlight carnival comes to mind) they could have a near perfect formula for future sonic games.

I'd kind of like the 3D sections to be a little more open/explorable though. I am liking these invisible walls they've put around cliffs though, one of the few times I've ever appreciated invisible walls in a game.

The 2D camera distance really helps during high-speed sequences, but it can make careful platforming a little tricky. In the future, they could fix this with a smarter camera that zooms in and out based on Sonic's current speed and the number of nearby enemies and hazards.
