Dreamcast VGA
So now with my new set and A/V receiver i have no S-video input. I'd really hate to go back to component. So im thinking VGA cable with a VGA to Composite adapter. Only problem is i think i remember certain games will not work with the VGA cable, is that true?
Re: Dreamcast VGA
Some. Few of which are seriously worth playing. Many VGA boxes have s-video support for that rare occasion.
As I understand it... VGA mode in most Dreamcast games is smart enough to auto-detect the presence of VGA, and set themselves to 480p.

the problem is i have no s video on my new set up thats why im going to VGA in the first place. What happens in not compatible games? blank screen?
Re: Dreamcast VGA
I think so. My VGA box has composite/svideo on one side, VGA on the other. With a switch to choose. As Dreamcast outputs trusty old 640x480 when in VGA (remember Windows 95?), near any generic PC monitor knows how to handle that.

Re: Dreamcast VGA
I don't rember details but I'm pretty certain there's a work around to force most of the games that don't support vga to work. But even then there's a couple games (like Bangaioh
) that just won't work over vga.
Re: Dreamcast VGA
I use the VGA box that racket himself sells. It has S-Vide out, composite out, and VGA out. I'm ready anything.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?
Re: Dreamcast VGA
wait, in your original post you said that you wanted to get a VGA box, then a VGA to composite adapter? There's no point in doing that. Just get a regular Dreamcast composite cord. Any benefit from VGA would be lost when its converted. If you're talking VGA to component, I think you have to be careful because VGA is RGB and Component as a TV accepts it is YPbPr and those two aren't directly compatible.
I can attest that Racketboy's VGA box has s-video and composite out. And I just bought a new plasma screen too, shocked to find out that s-video wasn't on any TV anymore. I asked the salesman at hhgregg and he just told me that the connection sucks. When I said thats the best connection for legacy consoles he seemed confused.

Re: Dreamcast VGA
If you use an adapter you won't get the 480p quality of dreamcast vga mode.
Re: Dreamcast VGA
A Little clarity before this gets out of hand.
1. I think the OP insinuates using a Dreamcast VGA adapter to VGA input of HD.
2. No S-Video input, so few unsupported games go thru VGA bypass to composite input of HD.
3. Both VGA and Composite cables are attached to box and the HD.

A screen will show up stating "Unsupported Video Signal." Just flick the bypass switch on the VGA box and switch inputs on your HD remote.Fahrenheit wrote:the problem is i have no s video on my new set up thats why im going to VGA in the first place. Re: Dreamcast VGA
Ran into a real surprise last night - Apparently Jojo's Bizarre Adventure supports VGA cable but NOT VGA box. I did not see that coming.
Another surprise I got was when I popped Phantasy Star Online Episode I&II into my Wii after getting it in the mail today. I've been playing PSO on the DC with VGA for about a week now. It's amazing how the DC's VGA signal produces a way more vibrant and stunning image than the Wii in 480p with what amounts to the same game.
I'll probably stick with the DC for episode I but it's going to be hard to go to the Wii for EpII.
