Assault Suit Leynos 2 not working :(

Post by Reprise »

Hey guys, I received Assault Suit Leynos 2 and Metal Slug in the post today (both for the Saturn obviously), and I seem to have a problem running ASL2 :?

When I boot it up on my Saturn (PAL) via the Action Replay 4 cart, it boots up ok, the Sega logo comes up and then a loading screen displays, but once it finishes loading, some text displays on the screen in Japanese (I'm going to assume it's some kind of error message, but I'm not certain), and then then the system justs goes back to the boot screen.

At first, I thought it might be a problem caused by the fact I have not yet switched my PAL console to run NTSC games properly, as the Saturns here only output at 50hz. However, I tried it on my laptop using SSF, and it doesn't even get pass the Sega logo. It just comes up with an SSF error message, before the emulator closes itself down.

So, I'm guessing this is a problem with the disc? I guess that seems obvious now, but just wanted your opinions. The weird thing is, I've looked at the disc and it seems to be absolutely perfect. I can't see any marks, dust or scratches at all. Meh, I don't know if I can even be bothered taking it up with the Ebay seller. I'm so busy these days, and it didn't cost me much. Grr just annoying.

Have you checked for disc rot? Sometimes a disc can be absolutely scratch free but still damaged if the manufacturer made any mistakes.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

Yeah seems likely that disc is just f*cked, despite no scratches. There's probably little I can do I guess. I don't believe the disc seems to show any signs of disc rot. Maybe it's just a dud disc.

This is annoying me now, because my copy of Grandia also started playing up a few days ago. Are Saturn discs just really temperamental or am I unlucky? My first disc of PDS is dodgy, first disc of Grandia has randomly started playing up after 8 hours of gameplay, and now ASL2 doesn't work.

I've never had THAT many problems with my Saturn. Maybe your laser is finicky and needs to be cleaned or adjusted?

I don't know, but I have two Saturns. So when I have the time, I'll bring out the broken one and see if the same problems persist (it's broken as in the output image is screwed up, but I should be able to use it just to see if the games work better on it and then I'll know it's down to my laser). All my other games do seem to work fine though.

Also should be worth noting that Assault Suit Leynos 2 not working definitely is not down to my Saturn as, like I mentioned in my first post, I tried it on SSF on my laptop and had the same outcome.

You've taken the disc and held it up to a bright, bright light bulb, printed side towards the light?

If you do that and see a lot of dots of light shining through the data portion of the disc, you'll know it's disc rot.

Yeah, there's still probably something up with that disc. I was thinking more of the other games you said were starting to act up when I suggested that. If there is a laser problem though, it would certainly make an already dodgy disc act worse.

If you have Nero, run the 'scan disc' in CD-DVD Speed, or some other utility that will check the disc for read errors.

Thanks guys for the suggestions and help.

@flake, yeah I did check the disc under a light and there seems to be no signs of disc rot.

@flamepanther yeah you're right. Panzer Dragoon Saga does mostly seem to be alright though. It's just that every so often (maybe 25% of the time) I load up disc one, there's a weird glitch in the bottom right hand corner of the screen. With Grandia, it's much more frustrating. It worked absolutely fine for the first 8 hours or so, but as soon as I got to New Parm (I don't know if you've played Grandia), whenever I go into an area that loads the world map, a lot of the time, it just won't load (the screen stays black), meaning that I have to restart the system and go back to the last time I saved. It's really frustrating, because sometimes the world map loads fine, but sometimes it doesn't (it's about 50/50). Everything else seems to work fine though, like moving from place to place etc, just as long as it isn't the world map loading. The world map worked fine up until that point in the game too.

@Hobie-wan Thanks for that suggestion. I do indeed have Nero, so will give that a shot.

I know Metal Slug (JPN) and In The Hunt (JPN) won't work on some Saturn models. Take a picture of the Japanese text and I can tell you what it says.
