The thing that really kills me is I don't think any company could do this series justice...I think that Chrono Ressurection and Chrono Trigger: Crimson Echoes wouldve been better than anything that Square or any other company could come up with.

Agreed, I played through a beta of Crimson Echoes. Hell, I'd love it if Squenix just made an expansion like they did with Final Fantasy IV:The After Years, just to better close the gap between Trigger and Cross. The DS port kinda, sorta, tried to make it appear that Magus was Guile, but nothing for certain.

Also, I still think Prophet's Guile is still floating around on the webs, at least youtube it. It's like a Magus only side story that fills in the gap when he was the "Prophet" for Zeal. Good stuff.

yeah i remember playing that a while ago and enjoying it. was the CE beta worth playing through?
I just pulled out my DS copy to finally beat it, only to have my battery die on me right before it asked me to save at the end, and my charger nowhere to be found..damnit.

The CE beta was everything you'd hope to see in an expansion pack like addition for Chrono Trigger. The team really put forth a lot of care to the story and battle system. The story was original and revolves around King Zeal (absent from Chrono Trigger) and his rise to power, amongst ten other subplots that directly tie into Chrono Cross. The Porre military, mention of the Viper clan, and a tad bit of the Dragon mythos. Basically it was heavy on the story, in a good way. They even added a few new techs and items which were based around the existing sets. Originally, they were going to include Schala as a playable character, but due to some limitations, the idea was scrapped and she took a lesser role. One of the only problems I had with it, was giving Crono a voice. I know it's a petty gripe, but I really think the silent protagonist role fits him. As for maps, they used a few beta maps found within the original rom of Chrono Trigger.

You can watch the entire playthrough right here:

But trust me when I tell you it's looooooong and will make you pine for the actual game.

So am I the only one who thinks this looks like crap? I thought this was a retro gaming forum. The original game was a masterpiece because of the pixelated 2D sprites, not despite them. This looks like an attempt to appeal to the meathead American gamers crowd who believes that 2D sprite-based games are "old" and "boring" and "not next-gen." We don't need 3D graphics to enjoy a beautiful game. In fact, the 3D character renditions in this video don't even look that great. This isn't a"resurrection".... it looks like just a "rehash" of Chrono Trigger with a 3D environment. Ho-hum. I didn't care for the Final Fantasy 3D rehashes on the DS either.

And not everything that Squeenix puts out is crap. Sure, the new Final Fantasy 14 or whatever it's called is crap, but Final Fantasy Tactics, Valkyrie Profile, and the new Dragon Quest 9 are great stuff. Even this Four Heroes of Light game seems like it may be enjoyable (haven't looked at it much though).

Sorry to join in the Remake Bashing... but probably the reason why people go ga-ga over a remake like this, is because it's way better than whatever Squeenix has been churning out of as of lately. (With some exceptions) That's probably also why Squeenix blocked them like that: Who'd want to buy their mediocre games when an updated version like this is more fun, and probably free?

You can see a lot of effort in the texture design and making sure Chrono looks like his design counterpart. I have to give them credit on that, and hope that this wasn't a teaser made on more powerful hardware, just for show.

That being said, I have to agree with Greg in the point that they should just let the classics be. Surely those guys won't have a problem turning all that into a decent original game. I recall somebody else moving forward with what they had left of a failed project. What was its name?

Oh yeah.

The original Playstation.

While I will agree, you can't touch the original in terms of quality and fun, I still think this would have been worth play had it been made to completion. I get your point about remakes and the 3d final fantasy series on the DS. (They all look like bobbleheads). Anywho, I think the main difference between this fan project and the DS nonsense squarenix churns out thrice a year, would be the price tag, and the potential of the clay taking a new shape in different hands.

As-far-as-I-know, the "resurrection" project was only supposed to let you play selected scenes from the games anyway, so it wasn't meant to overshadow the original in anyway.

Trust me when I say Chrono Trigger is near and dear to me, I saved my eight year old self's allowance for months to get it. My copy of Chrono Trigger and my battered strategy guide are among my prized possessions.

BUT! Since you aren't a fan of the "resurrection" project, you should at least check out the Crimson Echoes fan project, it should be right up your alley in terms of Chrono Purism. One day, it might be leaked onto the webs for all to play.
