CRTs age better than most other kinds of screen technology I know.Mozgus wrote:It's 12 years old. Don't buy it unless you can try it first. Picture on CRTs tend to age pretty fast.
Would this be a good Dreamcast VGA monitor?
Well in terms of reliability maybe. CRTs seem to last forever, but their picture quality always seems to diminish after a few years of normal use. You don't come by CRTs all the time with brightness or color issues like I do?marurun wrote:CRTs age better than most other kinds of screen technology I know.Mozgus wrote:It's 12 years old. Probably depends on brand and suchMozgus wrote:Well in terms of reliability maybe. CRTs seem to last forever, but their picture quality always seems to diminish after a few years of normal use. I've dealt with mostly Compaq and Gateway, and a few IBMs. My current one is a 19 inch IBM with a date of 2005, and it's serving me really well.racketboy wrote:Probably depends on brand and suchMozgus wrote:Well in terms of reliability maybe. I've had good experiences with NEC and Acer if anyone cares...Mozgus wrote:I've dealt with mostly Compaq and Gateway, and a few IBMs. My current one is a 19 inch IBM with a date of 2005, and it's serving me really well.racketboy wrote:Probably depends on brand and suchMozgus wrote: Well in terms of reliability maybe. I had an IBM before I moved that was nice.

well here is the specs for that monitor: http://support.gateway.com/s/MONITOR/Z0 ... 4305.shtml
I don't know... it only support up to 800X600 and is only VGA capable, not low HSYNC RGB. Personally if I'm gonna go out and get a large screen low res CRT monitor like this I'd try to also make sure it supported lower HSYNC's so that I could utilize it for all my consoles.
Keep in mind, Sega Genesis, Saturn, SNES, PC-Engine, and the sort all support RGB or can be modified for RGB. VGA is basically RGB with higher sync rate and resolutions.
All those old consoles are about 15-17hz Horizontal Sync, if you can find something like that... then it would be a steal!

I had this NEC presentation display I got from work for $25 before college... 30" 800x600 max resolution. 2x VGA, 2x RGB, and 2x s-video/composite inputs. Clear as crystal. Beautiful display. If you can find something like that, then you'll have a real gem.
Edit:
You might try calling the place I used to work: http://www.novastarsolutions.com/. If you're near South Lyon, Livonia shouldn't be all that far.

I'll second that. I had a 27" NEC 4PG monitor (for free!) that had mad inputs/outputs (VGA, S-vid, comp.). It awsome for PC and DC, lay that beast on it's side and Ikaruga was the best. I even made a PS2->VGA cable and it worked. Pain the ass to lug arround and I eventually broke the tube on it. Got a HDTV now and use with componet for the computer, but have to use s-vid for DC now. Of course I have another 27" SDTV for the times I can't deal w/ line doubling.
I suggest getting a cheap 20" computer monitor for the DC. The sharpness and detail on a Dreamcast w/ VGA out is outta this world. Plus it's easier to move it arround.
