Anyone into Classic Animation?

Post by Erik_Twice »

I was never interested into classic cartoons from the golden era until very recently. I mean, everyone has seen those on TV when they were little but thinking "hey, perhaps they are good stuff" is something completely different.

It's actually less accesible that it seems at first because there's quite a lot of crap, mainly made after the 50s, that you have to dodge and most pre-color animation is hard to get into. The lists of "best cartoons ever" listing lots of shorts with only historical value don't help either.

Fortunatedly I came across "The Barber of Seville" a Woody Woodpecker cartoon that had everything I wanted and more. Fun gags, exact timing, sharp razors...

After that I moved to the good Warner stuff and I got hooked. Picking the Golden Collection DVD 1 proved to be very worthwile, with lots of fun for everyone you can think of. It is also more than just a few laughs, there's a lot of brillance behind each cartoon, I, for one, get a lot of enjoyment just looking at the poses and the overall timing.

It's kind of a shame that this is at the same time so well-known and so obscure. The attrocious releases are just the tip of the iceberg. Even Tex Avery shorts are hard to find with only a quality release in the form of 5 Laserdiscs and a badly thrown together DVD.

So, someone else into classic animation?

I enjoy some Felix the Cat and Chilly Willy once in a while. Great stuff.

I love old cartoons. Some of them are just timeless, like many of the looney tunes cartoons, or early disney stuff - especially the goofy cartoons. I actually did a project involving quite a lot of research into old animations at university last year, and it just reminded me how great they were instead of putting me off them like it had potential to do.

I especially loves 80s and early 90s cartoons, because they're the ones i recognise from when I was growing up. That said, I'm not averse to older cartoons, and I enjoy quite a lot of the newer ones too. Phineas and Ferb is a current favourite of mine.

However, my all time favourite cartoon is the epic Count Duckula!

Hard to believe any of this stuff is hard to find. Seems like there would be a gigantic torrent of it somewhere.

Which Warner classics though? Somehow I doubt you'll see a buck-toothed almond eyed Daffy Duck on those.

A lot of the oldest Warner stuff is public domain (in the U.S.) now and available at archive.org.

here is something I found one day, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Censored_Eleven

this is the 'darkside' of classic cartoons!

back in the day no one thought of this being offensive but now a days it would cause problems!

I'm sure there's other banned episodes out there, cause I remember as a kid seeing some WWII bugs bunny cartoons making fun of japanese and such.

just thought that this would be something intersting to add to your thread
