Xbox Slim Reliability?

Post by gennss »

Any news on how reliable the xbox slim is? My elite has burned out twice. If the slim is reliable I would consider going back to xbox. i love their arcade and video zune system but I'm not comfortable with shelling out for hardware that's going to fail over and over again.

It includes a feature whereby the system automatically shuts down if it becomes too hot. Whether or not that helps however, kind of remains to be seen, as the system hasn't been out long enough to judge really.

I'm sure you know all this already though so I'm kind of stating the obvious.

Does it give you a warning?

Nope. It just gives you the "I'm too hot, i'm shutting down" message and then turns off. You're better off getting a Jasper Elite. Cheaper and better looking too.

From my experience, the new slim unit is much more reliable than any of the older units. Biggest concern that I see on all the gripe videos on youtube is that you'll need decent airflow to ensure the system doesnt overheat. The majority of the videos i saw on youtube were from people with cramped entertainment units. I have mine on top of my tv stand with nothing blocking it, and it has survived 8 hours of CODMW2, 6 hours of Reach lan, and a 5 hour dead rising 2 sessions without so much as a hiccup.

One of the things that the newer units does exceptionally well in comparison to the older units is playing games from the harddrive. After an install, the disc is not used for anything aside from booting the game. As far as I can tell, this reduces the heat a bit, and cuts down on the noise drastically.

I say buy one from Bestbuy and give it a shot again. Leave it on all day and see if you can get it to overheat. Worstcase scenario, return it. Give them a story that your spouse wont let you keep it, and you're golden :p
If you aren't having a good time, why are you playing?

Really? Never was an issue for me, I thought they only charge restocking on cameras and laptops.

Really? Just those? My parents had to return a $300 video camera that didn't work at all one time and had to pay it. My mom hasn't shopped at Best Buy since. That was at least eight years ago.

Dammit, did she write that stupid "don't shop at Best Buy" chain e-mail that keeps circulating? I hate chain e-mails.
