Night of the Blood Beast - I watched the MST3K version of this Roger Corman film. The plot involves an alien using a dead astronaut's reanimated body to spawn its young in an attempt to resurrect its race. A team of researchers manage to thwart the creature's plans, but not before it gives a warning that its species is eagerly awaiting humanity's return to the stars so that it can strike again. I love old scifi B-movie schlock, and this was a perfect example. The acting's poor, the plot's cheesy, and the sets are cheap. But despite this, I liked the film and its warnings about the horror of space. The film shines at certain moments, such as the discovery of the doctor's body, hanging suspended by his feet from the ceiling with his face torn off. I really wasn't expecting that.

Lake Mungo: This movie freaked me the hell out for some reason. I have no idea why because it is not a horror movie. It is even described as more of a drama with a ghost story backdrop. It is in a mockumentory format and is comapred to Paranormal Activity, but do not let this throw you off because it is not. There are no scares, no jump out at you moments. So why did it scare me, I think just the idea of what the story is based on. I started reading about it after watching and that's when I got freaked out. It is a clever movie about a family dealing with grief and would recommend giving it a shot. I warn you it has no action either. If you like dramas than go for it, if you like ghost stories, go for it.

American Gangster - Apparently it's not terribly accurate. Apparently I don't care, this film was still phenomenal. I've enjoyed Denzel Washington in just about every film I've ever seen him in, even crap like Virtuosity. And Russell Crowe gives a solid performance. Then again, as long is it's not a film in the Gladiator action vein he seems to be stuck in, I like Russell Crowe in just about every film I've ever seen him in, even crap like Virtuosity. The acting was solid from everyone, the music was great, and the dingy New York City was perfect. What a great gangster film.

Vampire Girl Vs. Frankenstein Girl - God damn you, Japan. That's all I can say. God damn you.

Mirrormask - Entertaining and colorful, but both the girlfriend and I agreed that it went a bit too far on a Modernist kick. Still, not a terrible film in its own right, and I can respect the imaginative flare behind it. I just didn't see this as the knock out of the park that I'd heard it was.

Underrated film, for sure - arguably some of the best work by both lead actors. Jay-Z's album inspired by the film is also excellent, you should give it a listen.

The Lion King.

Never been all that big on Disney flicks, but this is one that's still one of those timeless classics I can repeatedly watch even well into adolescence/adulthood.

A few movies over the course of the week

Image
Quantum physics and systems theory, got me intrigued in Fritjof Capra's work.

Entertaining, but hardly anything new. Malkovich was the star of the show.

Exploitation exploited! Ham-fisted but fun all the same. Don Johnson's still awesome.

Image
A most unusual documentary about celebrity obsession. Plenty of suffering in this world, it takes all sorts.

Just finished watching Chungking Express. I bought this on a whim because... Tony Leung, Wong Kar-Wai, Faye Wong... come on.

Anyway, excellent film on all levels. I'll be watching it again very soon just to make sure I didn't miss a thing, which I know I did. Highly recommended.

IMHO, a Nuke Em High remake may work if done right, and NOT PG-13. I myself have concocted such a concept. Basically, it'd be a 3D reimagining, albeit made outside if the Hollywood Studio system, and done in the style of Troma. So... blood, guts, gore, toxic waste and naked tits in 3D, just to shock, titilate and induce mondo vomiting.

And a Toxic Avenger remake would be bad, but if it's a Toxic Crusaders reboot or an adaptation of the musical, I'd be more leniant.
