Tales of Nostalgia! Genesis Peripherals:

Post by optmusprimenumber »

Being a kid with a Genesis was AWESOME! There were some cool peripherals I fondly remember, even if they sucked...

Image
This controller did not suck. It felt solid, the buttons were sweet... it was probably my favorite Genesis controller. Good for platformers where having shoulder buttons wasn't an issue.

Image
The Capcom Soldier Pad! Yeah it looks weird, but it fit so well. Another solidly built 3rd party controller that rocked. Basically it was just cool looking AND comfortable, which went a long way for an avidly gaming 11 year old. It was quite empowering when used with fighting games. (Side note, you may have noticed the picture is the Super Famicom version, rest assured, the Genesis had one too)

Image
The Power Plug was cool, at least on paper (or in the commercials). It let you have turbo or slow-mo with any controller you preferred. Also you could program button sequences or something like that. I don't remember having much success with it, but I was wicked stoked to get it.

Image
The 32X!! Sigh. Well, we all know how that turned out. Some love it and some hate it, I don't miss having one either way. Sure it was a pretty gnarly accessory and I got it at the end of it's retail life so it was on sale and affordable for a kid, but it was not good times. Basically I had never seen or heard of RCA jacks, had no idea what they were for, and since I had never seen them you can be sure that the tv I was using didn't have them. So I thought I'd try to play it anyway. Needless to say, seeing only the status bar and a black square with sound effects wasn't the Doom experience I was looking for.

Image
Sega Channel was freakin amazing. You probably know what it is (was) but in case you don't... Sega Channel broadcasted Genesis games TO YOUR TV(!)!!. Every month the list of 50(!) games changed up a bit and it was so freaking AWESOME!! Sega Channel was awesome. Browse, choose, download, play. Oh boy. The adapter was pretty cool too, it's always fun, as a kid, to plug something cool into something else that is cool so that you get 2 things becoming ONE resulting in something that is TWICE as cool, like Voltron! or Transformers! or Zords!

Ah, nostalgia

Haha, dude! The Seag channel was awesome, no doubt about that! I played with it all the time at my cousin's house, but if I recall correctly, wasn't it restrict to demoes only? As far as I'm considered, it paved the way to what is XBlive today, and cannot be forgotten ^_^

Still, that first pad, is that really a genesis controller? What about Z and C buttons?
If you aren't having a good time, why are you playing?

No way man, full games! There might have been demos too, but there were full games for sure. That first pad has the C and Z buttons on the shoulders.

As a slight diversion, does anyone have a manual for the Power Plug? I have obtained a loose one and can't find a manual. Replacement DOcs doesn't have it that I could find.

Hehheh... yeah i wanted one of those but never got it. From what i've read recently i didn't miss much. Impending tangent... Moving anything other than my thumbs (or the occasional wrist flick) while gaming gets less appealing to me the more developers make stuff that requires bodily movement. I play games sitting on my ass and that's how I like it. Thankfully most games these days that require one to get off their ass aren't really "video games" as i've come to know them, they're just silly family activities that revolve around the tv. Maybe Microsoft can make a Pumpkin Carving Kinect game and no kid from now until whenever will ever actually get to carve one him/herself and experience the real joy of doing something real. (sorry for yet a second tangent, i was beginning to amuse myself...) But yeah, why DO you own one of those? :D good times

I didn't have this controller, but I had one of the many similar controllers with the turbo switches. I loved the damn thing until it literally fell apart in my hands. I believe the A and C buttons completely fell off of it. Turbo switches were the only way to get through those propeller head levels in Earthworm Jim.
