We retro gamers are not alone, reaching the mainstream a bit
Sonic himself may be entirely mainstream, heck, at one time he was the most recognizable video game character ever (may still be), but would you consider retro gaming to be mainstream? I don't see it that way, but I do think it is growing in popularity every day. The point of the title of the thread was meant to mean that retro gaming seems to have caught the attention of the mainstream, albeit in a commercial and manufactured-attitude sort of way. But I still like the shirt and the sentiment that brought it my way.

I'm pretty sure retrogaming IS mainstream... otherwise Nintendo and M$ wouldn't be making buku bucks on Virtual Console and to a lesser extent XBox live . I wonder how many copies of the Super Mario Bros. series have been sold on VC?, and this is almost pure profit for Nintendo, but that's another story.

I was just trying to say that Sonic is not the poster boy for retro-gaming. Not when Sega is still pumping out Sonic titles, with most of them sucking. Now if I saw something like a Double Dragon shirt, or Battletoads or Galaga or Space Invaders. THAT'S retro to me.
And I don't think retro-gaming is getting mainstream. Sure you can download tons of old games on the Wii, but you don't see Nintendo actually advertising that do you? Every commercial just shows a bunch of people playing modern Wii games with the motion control. That's what most people are buying the system for.
Nintendo and even Microsoft have discovered that there is a market for retro games, but I don't view it as becoming mainstream. And like I said, seeing a few Sonic shirts doesn't mean retro-gaming is getting mainstream, considering that Sonic was always mainstream.
Just my opinion.
