Fallout 3 instead of Fallout 3 GOTY?

Post by Veno »

So I've been thinking its time i buy Fallout 3. I've waited since it first came out because I couldn't get the DLC on the PS3 version, and finally I can buy the GotY edition, since I dont' like buying dlc and prefer a solid copy.

Only problem is GotY is such a bad port with such bad coding, people said having all the DLC on one disc really isn't worth the trouble of constantly restarting your system and dealing with lag and freezing.

So instead of buying the GotY edition, I'm gonna buy the cheaper standard version. I'm making the right decision right? No point in getting the complete package if I can't enjoy it.

Are you keen on buying a physical copy?

I bought my copy on direct2drive.com, and it worked great for me. Their "GOTY" edition actually includes the main game and expansions on seperate installers, so I've never had an issue with it. And it's DRM free to boot.
If you aren't having a good time, why are you playing?

But thats for PC, the OP is talking about the PS3.

If the GOTY version was not 50-60 dollars the original was less than 20, I would have considered the GOTY. I have never heard of the glitchy problems you mentioned, so I don't know.

I only picked up the first 3 add ons.
I heard the later 2 were kinda... w.e

That being said Broken steel (raises level cap) is the only one you really need to pick up.

All of the add-on's with the PS3 GOTY run fine and you won't notice any huge, game breaking problems, EXCEPT for Mothership Zeta - holy shit, is that port bad. The framerate takes a killing at times during Zeta, to the point where it can be almost unplayable, but for the most part it runs OK. Other than that, I haven't encountered any of the freezing or restart problems you mention in your post.

Hmm, really? That's odd. Reviews on Amazon said there was all the freeze and lag. Plus, the Bethesda forums were angry and Bethesda for not releasing a patch for the "clearly broken game they decided to release."

No one else has experienced or heard of these problems? I'm talking about constant freezing where you have to reboot your system by hand, and consistent lag just from walking around.

I played through the main game on a PS3 GOTY version of the game. I haven't played the add-ons yet, which are indeed on the same disc.

The game did freeze for me 3-4 times in the 20 or so hours it took me to play through the main story. However, from what I understand this is typical of ALL console releases of the game regardless of which edition or system you buy it for. I'd say if you have even passing interest in eventually playing the DLC, just go for the GOTY version. I don't think you will find the technical issues are any better/worse than you'd find elsewhere.

I have the GOTY edition, and there is, without doubt, pretty consistent freezing. There was some lag, but that didn't really bother me much. It just lagged when loading new areas a bit, things like that. Stuff that would probably lag on PC, or any version of the game. The freezing though, made the game unplayable for me. I don't know what was at fault, the GOTY edition, the DLC (probably this), the port, but the game was definitely fucked. Fallout 3 runs as a 100% persistent world, just like Oblivion, so the further you go and the bigger your save file gets, the worse things will get.

I only played it for about 15 hours, over the span of 3-4 days. It froze at least once a day. I haven't really played it since, and if I do go back to it I'll just play it on PC. I would suggest just getting the normal game, there is a HUGE amount of things to do in the game. It will take you countless hours to complete everything in the game, so unless you have to have the DLC (which is just the same thing as everything else in the game), it's overkill to get it all at once anyway.

There ya go, there's the evidence I was looking for. Both versions of the game a fairly glitchy and buggy, but with all of the things crammed into the GOTY edition, it actually gets buggier.
I've read this mostly happens in the dlc, but I'm not interested in most of the dlc anyway I guess.
Thanks guys, regular edition it is. I'll probably buy Broken Steel like someone said before, just to raise my level cap.

Just incase anyone is still here, can you help me answer a question? How come when I'm browsing Amazon seller's inventories, whenever I see Fallout 3 for the PS3, it always shows up as:
Fallout 3 [CD] [PLAYSTATION 3]

Is that the choice of the seller or amazon?

What's the CD mean? That it's disc only or something? I can't contact the buyer since I'm buying through someone else and can't afford to waste their time with that.
