shenmue tips?

Post by RCBH928 »

hey,

i just started playing shenmue on the dreamcast first time ever. i just want to know if there is anything i should know early in the game.

for examplei read quickly a guide on ign that said i had to practice fighting every day, something i would have never knew. actually i thought there was no leveling up in the fighting part

it also said its better to keep two saves, with few days in difference . i didn,t know why

i noticed it had a time and days factor. is it possible that there might be things that if i miss i will have to dtart the game back from the start? that was the case with dead rising which i finished recently

no spoilers please i have been waiting forever to play this game...finally!!

I've completed the game a lot of times now, and honestly nothing beats your first game being totally ignorant.

That's my advice. Don't read guides, don't read anything, don't find out anything about the game (might be kind of hard now it's been out for 10 years). Just play the game and enjoy the experience.

Honestly, there's nothing you really need to know before playing it, so just enjoy the experience man and find out things whilst playing it.

As for having two saves a few days apart, I've never heard that one before... and I've never done that myself. I wouldn't bother personally. It would take out the "real-life" "simulation" feel of the game in my opinion.

And about training each day, well you don't really NEED to. My first play through of the game, I hadn't even realised that moves level up and it improves your fighting ability, so I never really trained. I still completed the game just fine without any real trouble. But yes, training does improve your moves and they do level up, so you can do that. You don't really have to do it every day though, but it can't hurt (especially if you really want to level up your moves to be the best).

Anyways, enjoy man! I wish I was in your position again. Playing Shenmue for the first time was an amazing experience.

I agree with this. Just play the game and enjoy the experience.
Don't worry about getting certain cut-scenes or fulfilling certain tasks, just play it.
After all, missing stuff will only give you a reason to play it again in future.
I've completed it like 4 times, and I still haven't seen all there is to see or do - but that's great, it keeps it fresh and means I have a reason to come back and play it again.
Screw keeping 2 saves or any of that shit.

Exactly, I completely agree.

I've completed it about 9 or 10 times now I think, and I'm pretty sure I've only just about seen everything (more or less).

I'll tell you what; completing the game for the 8th time, about 7 or 8 years later and STILL finding new stuff and new scenes is cool as hell :D

Just don't waste a lot of money at the arcade. Curse you Space Harrier! :D
Actually, the arcade is a good way to waste time if you can do everything you can in that day or if you have to wait about six or seven game hours.

thanks for the input everyone...
generally speaking, how many hours should I expect to complete this game?
is it the average 20 hours,
or the lengthy 70 hour rpg?

Probably about 20 hours. It's hardly epic in length like some Final Fantasy games, but it's long enough.

If you rush through it, you could probably do it in less than 20. If you take your time, you could probably spend a lot more than 20 hours on it.

helpful hint... practice your QTE at the local arcade.
Yea actually do everything that the game has to offer. Go gamble, go buy all the collectible toys from the vending machine. Stalk people and admire the time and effort that Yu Zazuka put in.

Why spend time practicing something useful when you could be playing darts? :)

Do you think after this game, I should go and play Shenmue 2(xbox). I had this game on the shelf for like 3 years now, it was my only chance to taste Shenmue, but i didn't know a year later i will have a dreamcast, so....i waited until I played the first

and is there and benefit or a use for the passport cd at this time?
