Is it bad to mod the Skeleton Saturn Console?

Post by Xionraserei1 »

I recently bought a Sega Saturn here on Racketboy and I am still waiting for it to come in.

It is the "This is Cool" Saturn model, I will be getting an action replay plus cart to play US games on it but if I want to play back-ups I will need to mod chip it.

Do you think it is Against a Collector's Code to ModChip this unit? Only 50,000 were ever made and I am not sure if it would hurt the value of the console to chip it.

My options are to buy a NTSC-U console and Chip that or Chip the Japanese console and buy the Action Replay cart.

Any thoughts?

Not as long as you don't break the console. But this decision is entirely up to you.

Only 50,000 were made

If you mod yours it makes it even more unique!
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

Something like adding more function to it seems perfectly acceptable to me no matter how rare, long as it doesn't hurt it aesthetically.

If you want to do it, just do it. I personally am against people in a community judging you on your actions such as this.

My take: If at all possible, use the method that does not require you to actually solder the chip to the Saturn. That way the "modification" can be easily and harmlessly undone. Do that and there shouldn't even be any question about what you're doing with a rare collectible.

Yes, please do this.

I never permanently mod any of my consoles, I've softmodded my Xbox, but I made sure to keep a backup, so I can undo it later. And if I ever want to play SFC games without buying an SFC, I modded my FC Twin instead, because I don't give a rat's ass about it. I feel like modding a console ruins the collector value.

I'd save up and buy another and chip that, actually.

If you have the skill to do the solder onto the IC method than you could just as easily remove it, if for some insane reason you wanted to return it to it's virgin state. Besides, it's an internal mod that enhances the playability of the console. The outer shell, which is 100% of its collectiblity value, is not compromised, so what's the harm? 50,000 is a fairly large run, and by the time most vintage videogame consoles bring in BIG bucks at auctions you, I, and our children's children will be long dead, if at all.

Personally I would chip it, using the soldering onto the IC method, and put a bright blue LED in both the console and controller.

Oh that is cool. Personally I wouldn't mod one myself as I'm not too sure of my modding ability, and I have a PAL Saturn anyway. But it's totally up to you, I'd say go for it.
