Way to Restore Wii to Normal?

Post by Josh »

Ok, so about a year and a half ago, I hacked my Wii to play burned games. Honestly, it was great at first until I realized I was screwing over a ton of companies. And playing the games unofficially just isn't the same, the sound is off, the graphics and the cutscenes tend to skip. My shelf of Wii games looks empty and dull compared to my Gamecube library. I simply want to know if there is a way to revert my Wii back to it's normal settings. Without bricking it, of course. Can I just update it from Nintendo or is it more complicated then that?

My friend just cleared all of the downloaded material off of the Wii and then reformatted it. I don't have personal experience though. Somebody else should be able to verify.

Depends on what you did to softmod it. The GBAtemp site has a pretty good un-softmod page.

I've always wondered if modding is worth it. I really want a Wii, and I want to try out a lot of it's games, but it sounds like you miss out on some things if you do play burnt games. I think the idea of having a HDD hooked up to it with an endless library is cool, but I'm also sort of a perfectionist when I consume my media: I want it to sound, look and perform the best it can.

Sorry I got off topic.

You can not simply delete files and reformat your system, you will not restore you Wii to a virgin state (you'll actually do more harm than good). Check out this excellent guide from wiihacks; I'm an active member over there - a great bunch can help you with any further questions.

The Wii reads DVD backups at only half the speed of retail disc; though it does not affect gameplay, you will notice lag during cutscenes and whatnot. Playing your backups from a HDD, on the otherhand, is actually better than disc - naturally.

You don't get the same problems when loading from HDD. All the games I've installed on my HDD work flawlessly. However some games need some fiddling with custom settings or custom IOS versions. It can all be done very easily through the settings menu of USBLoaderGX and once you've set it, it's saved for next time you want to play that game.

THANK YOU.

D.D.D, I had it set up so my Wii could run backup discs, emulators, and so I could install WADs on my Wii to play a few WiiWare and Virtual Console games.

Overall, the only difference I've noticed using a disc loader is that the sound quality is lower, especially in legit games, and that cutscenes tend to skip. I turned into a perfectionist as well. Ever since I bought my copy of Earthbound, I prefer to play games the way they're meant to be played, after that I didn't want to burn games.

If you're using an HDD loader with 100% data rips, there should be no difference between playing it on a store bought disc or HDD. I have 30+ Wii games and since I put them on my HDD, I actually play them more now. Playing a burned disc, from what people say, it won't be as good as a real disc or HDD loaded game.
If you feel bad about downloading games, buy them, rip them and then play them off the HDD.

I agree, the only difference I've seen with playing off of a hdd rather than the original disk is that it has faster load times off the hard drive. If you feel bad about playing copies, go buy the original (and leave them in the shrink wrap...for preservation or your collection) and rip disc copies to the hdd and you should have a great guilt free experience!

For anyone thinking of softmodding their Wii. It's always a good idea to make a backup of your original settings or firmware that way you can go back to that when you're done messing with things.
Thanks everyone...
