what is so special about the ps model scph 1001?

Post by mas »

Hi everone,
So lately I have been playing my psone with the lcd screen and I wanted to get an older playstation model for my collection. I noticed how cheap the original playstations are but the model scph 1001? I know that that model has the 3 audio and video ports but is that the best model to get? I remember when i first got the system in 95 i had that model and i remember that model had problems. So I wonder if I should get that model, and if not that one then which is the best model for the playstation one to get? I really would like some info. Thanks everyone

Yeah it's one of the many stupid audiophile things. It's located somewhere between reality and $150 earbuds.

For me it's because I'd like to build an HTPC into one.

Whether you believe the OMG BEST $10 CD PLAYER EVAR stuff or not, the 1001s had the issue where the rails for the lens sled were plastic and could wear creating read problems. This is what led to people using their older PS1 on it's side or upside down to get it to work. 5501 and later models fixed a lot of the reliability issues. If you ever want to use one of the cheat devices that plugs into the parallel port, you'll need an old brick unit, not the mini PSOne.

I have not heard about the first PSXs having superior audio. Have read about poor tracking on earlier units, especially the FMV files. I do like the Parallel port versions for the game Hunter "Instant On Action Replay" cart. But the later gray PSX models without the cart port have that great Soundscope CD Player built in.

Now this is interesting.

Soundscope on a PSX disc.

Good deal for a Pizza!

Got two 1001s myself, a Japanese and a U.S. model. Maybe audio confusion because of the extra direct RCA and mini jack audio plugs. I think the 5000 series as the best with improved tracking while maintaining a parallel port.

ha I will never forget one this first started and they were actually selling for like 1500$ on ebay. I ran home to check mine from when I was younger and I had one, went to list it and auctions were already starting to bottom out. I remember MANY of people making a QUICK buck on this pos.
Yep, I know im the one ya love to hate.

Yeah it's just an audiophile myth, up there with the old "color the edges of your cds with a green marker and they'll sound better" one.

can someone explain why some of these sites suggested you leave it turned on for a few days to get the best sound? I know it is probably ridiculous BS, but I still want to know what the audiophile logic is behind that....
