Re: should i get a PSP?
a lot of posts. Im reading through all 3 pages. Skyknight mentions that the FFT remake may be worth it. A few new characters, better translation, ect. Thats one i just may snag, since i thought that had a fantastic story to it. What new characters btw?
you mention lunar just has better graphics and translation. Didn't they streamline it? i thought i remember hearing they cut out some of the extraneous back and forth.
I basically am wondering if the remakes are worth getting for me considering i have all the originals. I actually have several of my ps1 games here because i was getting ready to clean and wax their cases. the ones int he box are:
Suikoden
Suikoden II
Vagrant story
chrono cross
Ogre battle
tactics ogre
Final fantasy tactics
Final fantasy anthology
Final fantasy chronicles
Lunar
Lunar 2
Tales of destiny
Tales of destiny II
Jade cocoon
Saiyuki
Koudelki
parasite eve
parasite eve II
Kartia
Vandal hearts
Vandal hearts II
Rhapsody
legend of dragoon
threads of fate
thousand arms
legend of mana
breath of fire III
breath of fire IV
Fina fantasy VII
final fantasy VIII
final fantasy IX
Grandia
Star ocean the second story
legend of legaia
granstream saga
wild arms
Wild arms 2
front mission 3
Castlevania: Symphony of the night
i have several more they're just not in front of me and i cant recall of the top of my head. Theres also a few i dont own that im crawling ebay for, including persona 1 and 2, vanguard bandits, and alundra (i actually owned that one before but cant find it. i lose a few games i had to rebuy, which pisses me off)
I also have quite a few SNES and genesis rpgs, including BOF I and II, FF II and III (i still am hunting down a good copy of FFI for the NES to complete my us release set), Shining force I and II, Phantasy star II, III, IV, and several others.
so basically for remakes i have the originals. Knowing that; What remakes do you guys consider worth it to pick up? I heard one vote for FF Tactics, any other ones?
I have several of the games mentioned. Which ones are worth getting if i own the original? For Disgaea i loved the first, but never got into any of the other ones for some reason. The characters werent nearly as appealing as Laharl and his crew. I wound up getting early endings with 2 and 3 just to end them. I also disliked phantom brave and didn't finish it, but loved La pucelle tactics, and soul nomad: world eaters. I dunno if that gives you an idea for my tastes for NIS games.
I have but havent played makai kingdom, the Mana Khemia series, GrimGrimoire. I have all 3 Atelier Iris, but never technically beat 1. I got that stupid bug at the end of the first one that pissed me off so i never got around to actually playing the next two. I also own Ar tonelico 1 and 2, and enjoyed 1 but for some reason stalled partway through and didn't finish it, i gotta pick that back up now that i think about it. Thats my take on the NIS games i own.
For the new ones listed: Is Crimsom Gem Saga the same as Astonisha story? that looked kinda interesting to me. But i think theres Astonisha story 1 and Astonisha story 2. Half Minute Hero also looked kinda amusing. I do NOT like MOnster hunter though.
As far as imports go.. how does that work? Can the PSP just play japanese games, or is it locked out like consoles are? How about UK based games? If it cant play either i guess imports are out =P Not that i need a port of BOFIII unless its updated a lot. I own that already
Since people are mentioning the DS a lot and even bringing up the 3d handheld; Let me be clear; i really dislike the nintendo DS. Its way too kiddy and i really think the stylus is pointless and stupid. I also have zero hopes for nintendo's handheld 3D game system. I think 3D is utterly retarded and dont understand why companies are pushing it so much. I just cant wait for the whole thint to die and go the hell away. I was considering buying a new HDTV but most companies are focusing on 3D gimicks instead of p utting out a top notch set. *sigh* i shoulda bought a Kuro when i had the chance. They're still better than any other set out there right now. Just about the only reason i would buy one would be for Suikoden; Tierkreis since im such a large suikoden fan. But even that seems like a waste. Honestly I dilike nintendo these days in general. I think they've gotten way too gimicky with their hardware and just seem to focus on selling mass market crap and the next mario/metroid/zelda game. I was actually thinking of maybe just trying out emulation for the DS since theres only about 2 games i care about. Does anyone know if the suikoden game is avalible for emulation and what the best one is? Im not sure how the stylus would work with emulation. If i did decide to get a DS for some reason im not even sure what model to get, theres several of those as well
I found this site:

which seems to have a good list though i dont know whats good or not. Can anyone point out some winners from that list or add some of their own?
So far the games that sound good are
Jean D'arc (is this good? This is the main one that had me looking a psp back when it came out, but i havent played it. Im just going on word of mouth and it looked damn awesome and difffernt to me)
Crisis Core: FF VII(not too sure on this one.. doesn't look like an rpg really)
FF: tactics (anyone else wanna chime in on if they think ther emake for this ones worth it?)
Star Ocean 1
Half minute hero
Y's 7
the rest would be maybe picking up some remakes like Valkyrie profile, or star ocean 2, or lunar. So go ahead and sugest some more stuff guys
i see Tales of Phantasia and Tales of destiny II (the real one) listed on the site i linnked, but in Japanes.e. someone PLEASE tell me those will be coming state side? if so i think i'll be sold on a psp
Oh it was mentinoed but not clarified on. How can you hook the psp up to the tv? i would probably want to do that.. wouldn't it look like ass on an HD? I also want some clarification on the screen improvment. It seems theres an upgrade from the 2000 to 3000? I probably wont be big on emulation on these, but i would like to rip my games to a memory stick if possible. Does the psp let you do that without pirate software?
If im buying one it would probably be around Xmas or so. I want to make sure theres not some new model coming down the line. Id be pissed if i bought one and the psp 4000 comes out a few months later >_<
*edit* i forgot to ask.. what the hell are umds like anyway? since it sounds liek the go is a no go (heh). Im concerned about their life expectancy vs other forms of optical media and how easily they get scratched, ect. Since i may have to troll ebay for some older rpgs

Well Star ocean 1 would be cool to get since i dont own nor have i played that onebrunoafh wrote:What does this even mean? The psp Is useless if you don't plan to emulate older games on it.
The PSP has a huge amount of great games. Some RPGs not mentioned yet:
Crimsom Gem Saga - this is probably my favorite one, it's an old school style turn based RPG. The characters are very interesting, story flows nicely. If you like old JRPGs, you shouldn't be without this game.
Star Ocean 1 and 2 - enhanced ports of the first two Star Ocean games are on the PSP. The first Star Ocean game was never released in the US before this, it's a great game though. Honestly, I'd take the first Star Ocean over any of them.
Half Minute Hero - a really cool parody/satire game, almost in the vein of 3D Dot Game Heroes. The gameplay is hard to explain, but you should watch some videos of it. It pokes fun at all the cliches and conventions of RPGs and doesn't take itself seriously for a second.
Disgaea series - a solid tactical RPG. You can play enhanced ports of the first two games on PSP. It has a very "Japanese anime" style if that's your thing. There are hours upon hours of things to accomplish in these games.
Final Fantasy series - lots of FF games. The Tactics remake and Crisis Core have been mentioned, both great games. Final Fantasy I & II have been put on PSP also. The fighting game, Dissidia, is also worth a buy. It's an incredibly fun game for any FF fan, loads of things to do, it almost feels like an RPG really.
Brave Story: New Traveler - nothing flashy really, but a good JRPG. You'll go in knowing what to expect.
Monster Hunter series - a series that many absolutely love. This game is pretty unique, the basic concept is that you hunt monsters, get materials, get better equipment, improve your character, etc. The combat is very fun, but the game has a bit of a learning curve. There are a lot of games on the PSP for this series, but you're best off just getting the most recent one which is Freedom Unite.
Phantasy Star Portable - I haven't personally played this, but I hear it's pretty much PSO.
Imports
Breath of Fire III - a UK import, so it's all in English. A direct port of the PS1 game. The rest of the games listed are all Japanese imports.
God Eater - pretty much Monster Hunter. The updated version of the first game will come to the US next year.
Suikoden I & II - this is a great collection to own. I see you mentioned Suikoden, so I figured this deserved mention. Pretty much direct ports, but with a few improvements. The graphics were slightly redone for both games, you can move diagonally, and the anime intro from the Saturn version of Suikoden I was added. There is also a gallery mode. Unfortunately, if you can't read Japanese playing this will be a problem.
Knights in the Nightmare - a very hectic game that hybrids SRPG with shump gameplay. You should check out a video for this game, it's really unique. It's originally for DS, the PSP version is the same minus annoying stylus controls. It comes out in the US in November.
King's Field Additional I & II - if you like the King's Field series, you'll probably like these games very much. Some things have been changed though, it's still first person but the movement and battle system have been changed. The actual King's Field games are much better of course, but more King's Field is more King's Field.
Kurohyou: Ryu ga Gotoku - this comes out next month in Japan, but god damn is it awesome. It's a Yakuza game for the PSP.
There are literally dozens of RPGs on the PSP, but I think I've typed enough. If RPGs are your favorite genre, you are greatly missing out by not having a PSP.

the only thing from that list that looks remotely interesting is the world ends with you. The rest looks very meh to crap to me. Im not sure why most of the posts from yomamma were just trashing the psp. From what ive seen it sounds like it does have a pretty good library of RPG's. Though most seem to be remakes of old stuff that ive yet to see if they're worth picking up. Can people sugest some games that AREN't remakes, or that are ports or games taht never came out in the states that would rock?yomomma1 wrote:^No, not true. Mario & Luigi Bowser's Inside Story (I'll include remakes and ports because other lists did )
Chrono Trigger
Castlevania Dawn of Sorrow
The World Ends With You
Dragon Quest IX Sentinels of the Starry Skies
Might & Magic Clash of Heroes
Pokemon
Disgaea DS
Lunar Knights
Shin Megami Tensei Strange Journey
Fire Emblem Shadow Dragon
Dragon quest 4
Mario & Luigi Partners in Time
Shin Megami Tensei Devil Survivor
Etrian Odyssey 2
Blue dragon plus (I liked that one alot, but some people didn't)

Re: should i get a PSP?
The UMDS are basically a gamecube sized disc encased in plastic(It sounds weird but if you look at it you would understand) I am going to assume that UMD won't be returning for the psp 2 as storage would be a problem, sony also has taken steps to get rid of it. They don't seem to get scratched up that bad. So you hate the ds because it is kiddy... In what way? The Stylus works great for alot of games that use it(Like professor Layton). That being said alot of games don't need you to use it.
I wouldn't know which psp model to get, the 3000 seemed fine. If you got a ds you would probably want a DS lite. But you don't want a ds, because it is a kiddy system. I guess you hate all games with a T rating or below. Tales games never get released in USA, well they do but rarely. If you only want RPGS the systems are pretty equal. You hated the ds before even getting one, so why did you make this thread? Based on the list you liked Symphony of the Night but Dawn of sorrow sounds boring?

Re: should i get a PSP?
PSP can play UMDs of any region. There is no region locking of any kind on the discs. Same with the DS carts if you were curious. On a side note, you can download PS1 classics from the PSN store and play them on your PSP without a problem too.As far as imports go.. how does that work?
Yes, it's the sequel. It is only known as Astonisha Story 2 in it's homeland of Korea though. The name was changed probably due to the poor reception of the first game. This game is a lot better though, you won't be disappointed by it if you end up trying it.Is Crimsom Gem Saga the same as Astonisha story?
I wouldn't bother then, because it's not updated at all.Not that i need a port of BOFIII unless its updated a lot. I own that already
It's definitely an RPG, it's a bit unconventional though. It feels very fresh for a Square game, and although this sounds shallow, nearly any fan of FF7 will be able to enjoy it.Crisis Core: FF VII(not too sure on this one.. doesn't look like an rpg really)
I am not sure how the TV hook up works, but apparently you can do it with any 2000 or 3000 models. I think the screen on the 3000 is improved, but you'll hear from many people it's worse. If you hold it in front of your face, you can see the black lines, but to my eyes they don't really appear when I'm playing. My favorite thing about the 3000 is that you can actually play in the sun (a little... better at least). I'd probably just get a 2000 or 3000, but really, a 1000 is just fine. You cannot rip, or play games onto a memory stick without pirating (unless it's a PS1 classic from PSN).Oh it was mentinoed but not clarified on. OK, first thing first, stop the s**t-throwing between DS and PSP, respect the gamers please.kenshin-dono wrote: As far as imports go.. how does that work? Can the PSP just play japanese games, or is it locked out like consoles are?

Like the Nintendo handhelds, there is no region lock for UMD's. So you can import BoF III and other RPGs from JP or Euro, and it should play fine on your NA PSP. What are UMD's? -> mini-disc that have storage spaces up to 1GB; the plastic shield should provide enough protection, as long as you not trying to breakaway the shield, or dropping the UMD at hard floors from a high place.
There are two types of cables to allow PSP display on TV, one was basic analog (RYW), and the other is component (5 inputs). I have the later, which works fine on HDTV, just make sure your PSP has enough juice to run. PSP-2000 and -3000 has a much better screen than -1000, I think most would agree. -3000 has more color saturation, but has issues with ghost images (most likely to show up on 2D games), but that is no prob for me.
Sony has no program to allow gamers to rip UMD games into digital format, which was the biggest hurdle that the PSP Go faced - not all games are available on the PSN (including PSP FFT), but you can use the PSP to play PSN PS1 classics like Suidoken 1 (no 2 yet
Tokyo Game Show is coming in a couple of weeks, one of the most anticipated is the Nintendo 3DS; like it or not, it will send some shockwaves around - already Nintendo has dropped the prices for DSi & DSi XL, and some analyst are wondering what will Sony do: drop prices further down, or counter with a newer model (-4000?), or a brand new console (PSP2 or PSP Phone?)? Nothing is confirmed or guaranteed at this point, but since you are planning to get one near X-mas, a bit of waiting wouldn't hurt.
If you did like the PS1 SotN, than you might want to add Castlevania: The Dracula X Chronicles, as it includes an update version of SotN - better dialogs and voice acting (with opt of Eng/JP), but it needs to be unlocked through the main game.

Re: should i get a PSP?
No region lockout on any UMD's or DS carts? really? thats pretty friggin cool, why aren't all consoles like that!! Good to know
alright guys im sold on the PSP. In fact i picked up Jean D' arc at walmart today for 20 bucks.. but i wont be playing it for a while. My bdays november 28th, i'll proably treat myself to one around then because we'll probably see a price drop or new bundle or something by that point. Thanks for the info on Tokyo game show, i had forgot about that. Whats the latest bundle for the psp? is it the kingdom hearts one? I really could are less about that, so hopefully theres a better one coming out.
I definitely want some clarification on the screens. I had heard the 3000's screen was better all around but skyknight says theres ghosting issues on it? and brunoafh mentions black lines or something? Whats up with that? I had thought the 3k version was a no brainer but if it has ghosting thats a BIG issue. Especially if its more prevalent on 2d games because thats what i'll be playing =P Were there some defective screens on the 3k line, or is it 'normal' for them to ghost, and have 'lines' across the screen (what does that mean anyway?)
As far as the cables go to hook up a tv. Do the component ones do HD? or at least 480p? Is there a component/composite combo or do i need both? I have a 60" HD tv i could use component on, and a 32" older sony trinitron i could use teh composite on, but would hate to buy both.
BTW, im not trying to start an argument about Nintendo, i just am not a fan. I commented briefly that it may be an option and it set off a debate, sorry. Since the lites are so cheap i may get one for suikoden Tekeris and a few other games. Plus my niece could play with it for nintendogs and junk like that too. I'm assuming the DS Lite is the way to go for backwards compatibility with the advance right? The only thing is someone mentioned that the lite supposedly had some issues with button durrability, is that true? Thats something id definatly wait till xmas for the 3d handheld announcment.
As far as games for the psp go, can someone point out some winnder from that list i linked to
http://xevon.awardspace.com/psprpgs/
and thanks for The Dracula X Chronicles recommendation. ... no ones commented on Jean D' arc btw. I hope i didn't pick up a stinker lol.
Oh ya, one final question; Is there anything to watch out for on UMD's if im buying them on ebay? Some of the older games will have to be. WIth ps1/2 disks i always look at them directly under a bright overhead halogen cam light and that reveals any scratches at all, even tiny hairline ones. It sounds like UMDs are encased in a protective shell.. so they should be scratch free right? Is there anything to look out for in the shell?
And tnx brunoafh, im really trying to get all the good RPG's. I have more than just whats listed. Im thinking i may take a pic of all the stuff i have once they're all cleaned and organized.
Tnx for all the info so far guys. Seems like im sold on the psp i just need clarification on this screen thing on the psp 3000. Some more game recomendations would be great too
*edit*
HOLY CRAP... please tell me the psp3000 doesn't look this bad:
that looks like some horrible interlacing issue

And tnx brunoafh, im really trying to get all the good RPG's. I have more than just whats listed. Im thinking i may take a pic of all the stuff i have once they're all cleaned and organized.
Tnx for all the info so far guys. Seems like im sold on the psp i just need clarification on this screen thing on the psp 3000. Some more game recomendations would be great too
*edit*
HOLY CRAP... please tell me the psp3000 doesn't look this bad:
that looks like some horrible interlacing issue
Re: should i get a PSP?
The latest bundle will be GoW:GoS
The color isn't for my taste, as I would like to see the blue/white 2-tone model arrive around the world, but that's only for JP only.
http://kotaku.com/5639643/two+tone-and- ... n-november
Also for JP only (now), is the latest Monster Hunter edition:
http://www.pspworld.com/sony-psp/news/y ... 012702.php
All three are the -3000 models, and so far so good, from the TGS, you could say there is no PSP-4000 nor PSP2 in sight.
There is nothing wrong with the -3000 screen, and you haven't heard people trashing their -3000 and buying more -2000. There is more color saturation for the -3000, and I personally have not seen any "qhost" while playing any of my games.
Jean D'arc is a solid title, maybe one of the under-rated PSP games, as I meet other owners that only play FF titles (sigh...), it is fantasize story of the heroine, as you will fight demons later on. It is an old school SRPG, but done right.

Re: should i get a PSP?
Damn that monster hunter PSP looks cool. The god of war one looks pretty cool but im concerned about the 3000 screen. I did some more looking around and found this
heres an example of the interlacing
http://www.crunchgear.com/2008/10/21/ps ... ng-abound/
and this is the more important one.. of the scanlines. I guess the 3000 is suposed to have really obvious scanlines when playing 2d games.. which is a big problem since thats what i'll be playing
http://www.reghardware.com/2008/10/22/p ... can_lines/
The metal slug game looks HORRIBLE in that. Please please tell me these are very exagerated and the 3000 doesn't look like this. I dont want to try to hunt down an older 2000, but i see a LOT of complaingina bout scan lines and interlacing issues on the psp 3000. Skyknight mentions no ghosting, but thats not the issue. Its those horrible scanlines and interlacing artifacts. Can i get feedback from psp 3000 owners on this? This is VERY important. I hate scanlines on games, especially when your playing 2d games it really stands out. Im amazed a friggin LCD even has them. If it is an issue you guys have seen, can you suggest any games where it really stands out? I may goto gamestop and see if they'll let me demo one or something
Alright onto the Games. Thnx for the sugestions. ive got a list here of what i want to get. Please help me lock in which ones are winners and which should go on the back burner or get dropped
Ive sort of organized them by:
High desire: I think these look cool, but could use some feedback on them and told if some are way off base or definatly belong there. ive added notes for the ones i was really unsure of
Medium desire: need feedback on most of these if they belong there or higher or lower on the list
low desire: are these maybe worth a look? definitely need feedback on these if theyre worth it at all.
This is a rough organization of them If you guys see any listed here that should get bumped up a notch or down let me know. Also, anything ive missed pleasedont hesitate to suggest more and what level it should be on
I also need to know what games have limited edition versions. The only one im sure of is Lunar.. does Valkyire profile or any others listed here have limited editions i should try to hunt down? hopefully someone knows. so heres the list
High desire:
Lunar: Silver Star Harmony (pretty sure theres a special edition of this one, right?)
Knights in the Nightmare - remake of a DS game that got good reviews. anyone played this? plus i think you get a free copy of Yggdra union if you preorder or something. I actually dont know if its good the DS version just got good scores
legend of heroes
legend of heroes II
legend of heroes III
PoPoLoCrois - unique looking..got good reviews; is it good?
Final fantasy Tactics- The war of the Lions - one of the best rpg stories out there, yay. Is there a limited edition? i mostly see the greatest hits out there
Tales of the world - A tales game, yay
Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth - Is there a special edition?
Crimsongem Saga (Astonishia Story 2 i think?) - I hear this is fun.. does it belong up here?
Dissidia Final Fantasy - looked kinda dumb to me but people rave about it
Final Fantasy VII - Crisis Core -same as above
Star Ocean: The First Departure - was there a limited edition for this?
Ys Seven - is this awesome? i think i heard of a limited edition for this one
Medium desire:
Tales of eternia.. any changes? is it even available? I dont see it available here but i see an English version. Maybe thats the European version? If so will that play fine in a US psp? I think someone mentioned you can play any regions game on a US psp, right?
Hexyz Force - Looks kinda interesting but dont see much info on it.. is it any good?
Half minute hero
Prinny: Can I Really Be the Hero
Disgaea afternoon of darkness - This i need feeback on for sure: is it worth it if i have the original?
Disgaea 2: Dark Hero Days -same question
Final fantasy I -confused.. some places have it listed as Final fantasy others FF anniversary edition. whats the diff? is there a limited edition, and is it called the anniversary edition?
Final fantasy II - same questino as above
Breath of Fire III - any updates at all i think someone mentioned earlier in the thread this was a straight port?
Star Ocean: The Second Evolution - any updates at all? or limited edition?
Generations of Chaos - i hear this is horribly convoluted but kinda fun once you get used to it. Should it be here or does it kinda suck?
Generation of Chaos Aedis Eclipse - same as above
Astonishia Story -heard it sucks but 2nd ones good? Is this one worth a look at all?
Kingdom of paradise - good reviews but looks generic
Wild ARMs xF - Crossfire - i like wild arms but this got mediocre reviews. Wild arms 5 wasn't taht good IMO. the gameplay was ok but storry was terrible
Disgaea Infinite - what is this? a graphic novel game?
Low desire::
Brave Story: New Traveler - an older one but got pretty good reviews.. is it worth a look? should it be higher on the list?
Yggdra Union: We'll Never Fight Alone -GBA remake i think.. maybe i should just get that version if i get a DS? mediocre review. plus i think theres a preorder bonus of this with Knights in nightmares
Dragoneer's Aria - bad reviews
Riviera: The Promised Land - DS remake i think
Gurumin: A Monstrous Adventure - rated high but looks way cutesey and weird
spectral souls
Shin Megami Tensei: Persona - this is the only remake i DONT own. but am working on getting a copy of
Valhalla Knights - sub par reviews
Valhalla Knights 2 -same as above
Castlevania: The Dracula X Chronicles - not sure what this is i gotta look into it.. is it a remake of symphony of the night or somethign different?
oh and 1 non rpg:
Kenka Bancho: Badass Rumble
theres the list.. heres a couple extra bits and ends:
Due out soon and looks neat:
Z.H.P.
ClaDun this is an rpg!
anyone heard good things about those 2?
I also had some games that i really want and saw previews for but very little info.. are these games only avalible in japan?:
Tales of destiny 2
Tales of Phantasia - Full Voice Edition
Tales of Rebirth
Princess Crown
and Kurohyou: Ryu ga Gotoku Shinshou was mentioned by someone and looks AWESOME. is there ANY hope of that coming stateside?
there we have it. Hopefully i can get some advice on where these should be on the list. Or maybe some other good sugestions. I really would like to know what games have a special edition as well, if anyone knows. I apreaciate the help so far guys. Im almost there. After i get some feedback and lock this in i'll know which ones i'll be picking up sooner rather than later

Next time I'm getting a handheld I'm going to ask on ten different forums because I'm so indecisive
