If I were you I would start off selling full pre-painted systems here or on eBay.

You could eventually buy dead consoles, paint shells, sell the shells, then try to get a buck out of the innards from someone. Better yet, if you are able to get two consoles with two different problems, you could swap parts to get one working console then sell it.

I painted my 360 a month ago. It rewarded me this past weekend by dying again after sitting resting for a month. But anyway, controllers are going to be tricky. Since those are handled, dropped, and inundated with oil and sweat from your hands you have to use some tough paint or dye or seal them really well.

The problem with colorware is that they don't actually paint your console or stuff. They're a licensed reseller for all the products they offer colors on so they simply replace your existing case with a newer one.

Getting an existing case and painting it to look as if it were the stock color by default meanwhile keeping all the original silk screened logos is a tough one.
My Consoles:
Genesis - Nomad - SegaCD - GameGear - Sega Saturn - Dreamcast - NES - SNES - N64 - Gamecube - Wii - Playstation - PSone & LCD - PS2 - PS3 - Xbox - 3DS

How do they obtain shells for all those devices? -- especially Apple ones -- something doesn't sound right there...

They're a licensed reseller. Basically they have a license to make and sell Apple cases and the like in such a way that it won't void the warranty like if you or I did it.

They even sell most of what they offer brand new on the site itself. Most companies are actually willing to tap into seriously niche markets kike this as it builds lots of brand recognition amongst the younger crowd. You'd be amazed how many idiots I've seen buy a complete piece of crap because it came in black/red/yellow/white/pink/whatever color you can think of just because they liked the color.

thanks for all the feedback so far, it's greatly appreciated! and thanks for all the encouragement too. I definitely would start offering them here, and prolly one or two shops in the area that cater to retro video games. i'm pretty excited about the venture and can't wait to get started. I had to take a business trip to philly a few weeks back that gave me some time to put some ideas down on paper. color schemes, designs, themes and all. i hope to have a few consoles done in the next month ready to present. i'll keep you guys posted.

Did anything ever come of this? I'd love to buy some custom painted shells to give a little new life to some my consoles.

Modern consoles and handhelds would be your best bet.

People are pretty attached to their classic consoles.
