A couple of years ago I picked a boxed Sega Master System that came with bundled 3D glasses for about 30 dollars. Unluckily the glasses are missing a piece (the left piece that goes behind the ear), so I assumed that probably they are broken. I didn't have any games to test them and the 3D games tend to be rather expensive. Recently I got hold of a cheap Space Harrier 3D cart and today finally hooked everything up.
I'm impressed. Seriously. I'm not a great fan of Space Harrier but playing in 3D is actually fun. The effect of depth is quite convincing even though the objects remain flat since they are all sprites rather than 3D models. And it's in full colour, not like when playing with coloured red-green glasses. Not bad for technology that is about 25 years old! Definitely worth trying.
On the negative side though, it's quite jerky (since everything is effectively being drawn twice) and it gave me a bit of a headache. And one more thing: the glasses tend to be bloody expensive to buy.

Sega 3D glasses

Re: Sega 3D glasses
The technology used on the Sega glasses isn't that much different than what's used by some new 3d tvs now. It's pretty amazing that Sega puled that off so long ago.
Re: Sega 3D glasses
I was able to pick up the glasses with Missile Defense 3D, Zaxxon 3D, Space Harrier 3D, and Maze Hunter 3D and was thoroughly impressed by the technology.
I haven't tried the other two 3D games, but out of the four I have Maze Hunter 3D is the must play. Since the game is presented through bird's eye views of the labyrinths and each labyrinth has multiple floors at different depths, I find the 3D effect oddly mesmerizing, especially when you jump.
As for the gameplay, you simply collect weapons/power ups while traversing the mazes, which is surprisingly addictive. Unfortunately, all the games eventually give me headaches so sometimes small doses are necessary. Anyway, if you notice the game for cheap you should definitely give it a shot.

I've been told that there are third party 3d shutter glasses on ebay that will work, as long as it has the same plug as the official ones. And they are a lot cheaper.
Re: Sega 3D glasses
Yeah, I've been told that as well. Although the jack is the same, even the official Sega glasses plug into a card converter so I imagine you would still need to buy the converter which goes into the Master System's card slot in order for the glasses to work.Zapf wrote:I've been told that there are third party 3d shutter glasses on ebay that will work, as long as it has the same plug as the official ones. Its funny how I can play a $20 Master System with a regular hook up to any old $50 TV to get 3D but to play a $300 Playstation 3 in 3D requires a whole new "3D" TV that is thousands of dollars and only over HDMI.

I really want to try these out but they aren't high on my priority list to buy. Plus, most of the one's I've seen even online for a reasonable price are functional but usually missing a piece. That would bug me to no end.

Re: Sega 3D glasses
Me and me brother got the most expensive system from our mom. We didn´t have alot of cash in those days, but at certain times, we got something awesome.
Me and my brother took turns at feeling like a king. Missile Defense 3D was built into the system.
We played that ALOT
It´s a 3D glasses and light gun game in one. Altough the game is quit simple (6 different levels), the experience is great.
But, warning, you do not want your family members walking in while playing, while you look like a jackass. A royal Jackass

Re: Sega 3D glasses
I have a cart and book Zaxxon 3D if anyone is interested. I play my SMS from time to tome, but I don't have plans to get the 3D stuff so it might as well go to someone who has glasses.
