I think there was a Firefox plugin that let people that have it chat with other people that have it and are browsing the same URL (independently of the URL owner etc.) - I'll try to find what it is.

That requires the user to install more software as well.

The plus side to the Java or Flash thing is that most people have java and flash. Especially flash. All it requires then is a simple click and bam you're in a group chatroom designated specifically for this website.

Web design is all about that... design. You want something pleasant and easy for the customer or reader. If they have to work at accessing something of yours, they just might not do it.
