Gonna paint a wavebird

Post by CFFJR »

Today I'll be taking a crack at painting one of my wavebirds.

Its going to be black, but I haven't decided if I want to paint the buttons as well.

I've got the d-pad, a, b, x, y, z, and start buttons, plus the on/off switch if I feel like it.

Course, I've only got a couple other colors available at the moment, red, gold, and white. So the question is, should I paint the buttons, or leave them original? And what combination of buttons and colors? If I did it at all, I thought I'd leave the d-pad and start button original, then paint the other buttons all one color. Dunno. Thoughts?

Edit: I just realized this topic might be better placed in Hacks and Mods, my apologies. Please move if its a problem...

That's so interesting. I'm glad you decided to share this. I would give you my opinion, except that would only encourage you to post more pointless shit.

And I suppose this post contributes a lot to the board eh?

Go be an ass elsewhere.

Here's some brilliant advice: if you don't like the topic, don't waste time responding.

what kind of paint are you using?

i painted a genesis all white and if you look at it wrong paint will chip off somewhere. i can't image what will happen when you have sweaty hands button mashing.
if you took a shit, please put it back

Its a spraypaint for plastics. Not the usual brand people recommend for this (krylon fusion) but the same idea.

What did you use for your genesis? And did you sand it beforehand?

Admire the initiative, disagree like crazy with the idea.

Painting a console is okay because you don't really handle it that much. Fingerprints here and there. Maybe a sweaty palm now and then.

But a controller? Take a look at whatever controllers you use regularly. They look like crap, don't they? All the oils, dirt, grime and what not from you hands rub constantly on them. But it's not THAT bad because they aren't painted - the color is all in the molded plastic. You can wipe them down and they'll look great.

No matter what kind of paint you use you're going to create a surface of color that will rub off every time you handle the controller. And you'll ruin a wavebird. It's not like they make them anymore, right?
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

Yeah... that's true.

I don't like the color of this wavebird, (the regular bland gray) but I wouldn't want to make that worse, especially if I screwed up the job.

Probably would be best if I did something else.

i took gritty sandpaper and took all the paint off. then i took fine sandpaper and made it all smooth. then i hit it with 3 coats of primer and then 3 coats of spray paint for plastic. i think it might of been kryon fusion, actually. and in between each coat i took fine sandpaper to it to rough it up a bit. and now that i think about it, i might have finished it off with a few coats of clear sealer.

that is about 12 coats and all, ha. i think i did a pretty thorough job but it really isn't holding up well. for example, i accidentally banged the controller output thing-a-ma-bob into the system and it just tore a big ass chip in it. but, maybe the paint i used isn't for the job.
if you took a shit, please put it back
