What was the first Sega CD game?
I'm trying to get the first CD based game for the first CD based home console, the Sega CD. The trouble is, I have no idea what the first game made for it was. I can't find a definitive answer online as well. So what is the first Sega CD game? If you could list the first one made for both the Japanese market and the North American market as well that would be much appreciated. I think the first one made for the U.S. market was Sewer Shark but I'm not sure.

There were five discs included in the bundle at launch.MetalSonic wrote:I'm trying to get the first CD based game for the first CD based home console, the Sega CD. Was it the first Cd based home gaming console? I'm pretty sure there was something before it. I can't remember.MetalSonic wrote:I'm trying to get the first CD based game for the first CD based home console, the Sega CD.

Re: What was the first Sega CD game?
To be fair, the PC Engine beat Sega to the CD market in Japan by about 2 1/2 years. I also believe it came out in the US a few months prior to the Sega CD.MetalSonic wrote:I'm trying to get the first CD based game for the first CD based home console, the Sega CD.
Wiki's Sega CD release list, (found here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Sega_Mega-CD_games ) breaks down every CD release for all regions from 1991 - up to 2005. Looks like there were a few games released in the 1991 JP release.

Re: What was the first Sega CD game?
good ol' wiki:
TurboGrafx-CD
The TurboGrafx-16 was the first video game console to have a CD-ROM peripheral [6] (following the PC-Engine CD-ROM add-on in Japan, although the FM Towns Marty was the first Japanese console to have a built-in CD-ROM). The TurboGrafx-CD debuted at a prohibitive $399.99 (and did not include a pack-in game). Monster Lair (Wonder Boy III: Monster Lair) and Fighting Street (Street Fighter) were the initial TurboGrafx-CD titles. Ys Book I & II soon followed. However, the TurboGrafx-CD catalog grew at a very slow rate compared to the library of TurboChip (HuCard) titles.
The TurboGrafx-CD came packaged in a very large box, 85% of which was filled with protective styrofoam inserts. By some accounts, no other video game console (or peripheral) has been packaged in such an overkill manner. The TurboGrafx-CD did however come with a large plastic "carrying case" that could comfortably hold the TurboGrafx-16 base system, TurboGrafx-CD, all AC adapters, 2 – 3 controllers, and a few games.
Although the TurboGrafx-CD library was relatively small, American gamers could draw from a wide range of Japanese software since there was no region protection on TG-CD / PC Engine CD-ROM software. Many mail order (and some brick-and-mortar) import stores advertised Japanese PCE CD and HuCard titles in the video game publications of the era.

CD-i also beat Sega CD by less than a month in Japan, but almost a full year in the US.

That's what it was.noiseredux wrote: TurboGrafx-CD
Thanks. Couldn't remember and I didn't want to post the wrong information.

The Sega CD was NOT the first CD based home console.
Turbografx-CD. More accurately, the PC Engine CD-ROM2 beat Sega by YEARS. FYI, Fighting Street (Street Fighter I) was the first game released for it (alone with NiRiKo, but that is too lame to count).
Yeah, others beat me to it, but this sort of misconception is a problem that cannot be ignored! Very serious issues here that could have dire effects on the space-time continuum.

Re: What was the first Sega CD game?
Hmmm... I thought there was something before Sega CD but I read on like 3 different articles that detailed the history of disc based gaming consoles that Sega CD was the first. Guess they were all wrong lol. I've got the regular Turbografx 16 and it seems like I'm going to have to upgrade with the CD addon.
So Fighting Street was the first Turbografx CD game....sweet. I've always wanted to play that game even though I've heard awful things about it.
