What classic franchises that have, for the most part, moved to 3D should return to 2D more often?
Sonic, Mario, and Metroid are obvious choices... anybody have more?
After seeing the upcoming Bionic Commando and Street Fighter IV, I'm thinking those should be on the list...
What Games Should Return to 2D?
I'll probably get yelled at for this, but Final Fantasy.
I was so upset when FF VII switched to 3d on PSX that I could never get into it. Sure, I played FFVIII and IX (and later X) all the way to the end. I even enjoyed VIII a lot. But every time I went back to play VII that same bad feeling was there. It wasn't the same after they switched from the birds eye 2d view. I'll take FFVI (3 in the US), II and V over the new ones any day of the week.

Mario for the most part has been a success in 3D. Mario 64 and Galaxy are stunning examples of 3D done right.
However, I would love a true Mario sequel to be done in 2D someday with HD sprites and all the creative magic that was shown in Mario 3 and Super Mario World.
The standout and obvious choice for 2D only action has to be Sonic. I feel that there are a ton of creative aspects that can be done for sonic in 2D that have and never were explored.
As Racketboy stated, Mario and Sonic are obvious choices...outside of that I would say that I would like to see more shoot'em ups made in the old school 2D style rather than countless Halo clones.

Yeah, I'm not saying that there shouldn't be anymore 3D Mario (or Metroid) games, but there should also be 2D console versions (and handheld, for that matter). Look at how much everyone loved New Super Mario Bros on the DS.Mucx wrote:Mario for the most part has been a success in 3D. Mario 64 and Galaxy are stunning examples of 3D done right.
