Great Topic but seriously while online play is good way to play Multi player nothing can replace the real thing when you play together and socially the experience is completely different.

Having grown up in the Arcades and 2 player console games.
The social aspect of gaming when it is in person can't be beat.

At family occasions we all still whip out the fighting games to play.
When we first started it was Street Fighter 2 on the Snes
Then when the Saturn came out it was Virtua Fighter 2 everyone wanted to play.
As the Saturn started to die off it was Tekken 3,
When the Dreamcast came out everyone was super impressed with Soul Calibur
When the Dreamcast era died off it was Soul Calibur 2 on Xbox and PS2.
Lately it has been Street Fighter 4.

I can't even begin to describe it the winner loses rule and the you left the room rule so you have to miss a turn.
The way you taunt the other players when you win so they get pissed off and lose easier.
The way you get angry when you lose and almost wanna smash the controller coz they beat you so badly on the game on top the other player was taunting you.

We had like a local arcade with 1 Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo game and the other Samurai Showdown and most of us were rubbish at Samurai Showdown so our tournaments were held on Street Fighter.
We all got pretty decent at playing and once we went to the Big arcade in the city centre and I the SSF2 Turbo was on a massive screen and cost 20p a game as opposed to our 10p.
In any case I put my money in and the guy was supposed to be good but when our group got there we absolutely dominated the place.
Awesome feeling :D.

Ah man I miss the Arcade days.

Lmao that's hilarious I've never experienced that with online play but then again I don't really play online either.
I had a brief flirtation with it on the original Xbox with Dead or alive 2 Ultimate and some Street Fighter Anniversary.
Street Fighter was dead but Dead or alive 2 was kicking with players it was fun for a while but I got annoyed with lag and other issues that make online fighters annoying to play online.
In the end I think I ended up busy with other work related stuff and paying for a subscription to Xbox live Gold seemed like a waste of money

Online gaming is good but the thing i dislike about it is when you are playing a game online you always see the person on the other side as someone you dislike.
Like Street fighter IV everyone but you is a scrub.

Some games can only ever be enjoyed in person, every played wariware on the gamecube, that game is mental when played with friends.

When I play online I can't taunt them. It's too fun to taunt your friends when you're half a lap ahead on Rainbow Road of MKDS.

I think you have something there. When playing against someone online, I usually see them as this unidentifiable entity that I have to defeat. Even if I know the person I'm playing against, they are a black box. This can make the game even more frustrating if the person you are playing against is exceptionally good. It's like playing against Akuma in Super SFII X/Turbo. He punishes you over and over again, but he's a soulless entity.

There is a primal comfort in being able to look next to you on the couch and know that the person beating the snot out of you is flesh and blood. That they are a human, just as you, and just really good at the game. When things are over, you'll go out for drinks and play a different game next time. You'll talk about it next week with other friends.

This is a very large emotional piece of the puzzle that is missing from online play.

I prefer playing games with friends locally. It is a more wholesome experience. Plus you can trash talk your friends right next to you and hope they don't punch you in the arm for being a dick :P When game time is over there is usually something else to do in the meantime. Social interaction is a must in today's world when so many people hide behind facebook and their cellphones.

As for online gaming, I enjoy it a lot. I don't play games online on consoles. I don't like the feeling, I don't like the fact that I can't do anything else on that console while I'm "online".

On the flip-side though.. I am part of a gaming group called the DMC. We first started on steam and to get in the group you have to know a member, you MUST be social-able, and you MUST have a microphone. We play games together usually, we try to all get on one team but usually that never happens. The best part about this is it forces you to perhaps step out of your comfort zone and help meet new people. I know it has helped my social life in the "real world" just by doing this. Some of my closest friends are people I have met online, and we have gotten together in real life in a voted on city to hang out. It's a ton of fun.

I strongly recommend gamers who hate playing games online with faceless, nameless people to join a gaming group (there are many) and just start to mingle. Anyways... that's my 2 cents.

Online gaming is great. Most of my friends live far apart and/or have full time jobs, so it's not always easy to get a LAN party together. But whenever we're celebrating something (a graduation, birthday, birth of a child, etc.) we choose to do so with a LAN party. So for me both are really important. I still sit with my girlfriend and play split screen or "pass the controller" multiplayer on a daily basis, though.
