I mean the PS3 does all the multimedia you could want so XBMC or something would be pointless and most importantly we live in 2010. In 2003 or so Iwould have been all for this. Emulators? On my TV!?
But fast forward 7 years and today it's a moot point. EVERY TV comes with either VGA and HDMI or just HDMI. EVERY Computer comes with either VGA, DVI or HDMI (Not to mention S-Video or Composite for the SDTV crowd) and everyone owns or can get an older laptop or crappy tiny PC to sit next to their TV as an emulation box for under $100 from a used computer shop.
Frankly this is all pointless. Just a bunch of people who are using an excuse to start pirating after loosing a ridiculously useless function. Linux on the PS3 SUCKED. You didn't even have freaking GPU access! And now you're all getting excited over being able to hack the stupid thing for emulators and applications?
What application could you want that the PS3 doesn't already have? What emulator could you want for it when hooking up your existing computer to the TV itself is miles and way the easiest and most cost effective solution? Frankly there will be people that will argue that it's all for legitimate reasons such as archival of DLC and DL Games and disc based games for when the hardware is obsolete later and I agree on that, but give me a break. Releasing this now in the middle of the console's life means that 99.9% of it is going to be for piracy and you guys all know it.
Thanks a lot for turning a good machine into the fucking PSP all over again, because Sony's now going to make it hell on me, THE LEGITIMATE CONSUMER.
End Rant.\
OtherOS wasn't useless. The ZeroGameProject was turning the system into a genuinely useful emulation hub. NeoGeo, MD, SNES, NES, GBA, GB etc were all playable. To have that functionality returned to me in a way that I don't have to reboot the system would be great. I don't want to have to fuck around with a laptop connected to the TV, do you know how fucking annoying it is use a laptop in that way? Unless I'm paying to get Maximus arcade on there and spending hours setting up for use with a USB pad it just isn't worth the effort.
Having that kind of functionality means 1 less thing I need to have hooked up to my TV which is a bonus. Just because you can't see the value in it doesn't mean it's completely worthless.
How does the exploit even affect you, just update, STFU and get on your way. Nobody is FORCING you to use the exploit. You can update to your hearts content.
Personally, I want to be able to use the backup manager because I want to benefit from the increase in loading times. I couldn't care less about pirating, either way I'd have to spend money... I might as well just buy the fucking games. Besides I've got every single game worth buying on the system, why would I even want to pirate?
OK, let's break this down:
Wireless USB keyboard + mouse COMBO $19.99 @ RADIO SHACK
Wireless Logitech Gamepad $19.99 @ GameStop
Opening up your emulators and setting them to use a gamepad? Five minutes.
Setting the output resolution on your computer to match your TV? Five seconds.
I don't mean use a fancy frontend that costs money, just boot to freaking windows without a password so it auto-logs you in and voila! It's simple as hell, and guess what!? You now have access to INFINITE internet content and the World's ultimate DVR and TV station on your television!
All you've given is a paltry excuse for why you want to use a hacked PS3 or a bad OS that both have been done better elsewhere in a cheaper and more convenient fashion.
What truly I'm mad about is that as soon as this hits mainstream I'll get stuck with PSP like droughts or thousands of ultra slow and annoying updates non-stop. It also hurts that I'm into titles from NIS and Atlus too so now more than likely we're gonna see them jump to 360 or to Download only which means either no more retail copy for me or I need to spend money I don't have on a system I can't afford!
You have to think aside from what you see as a legitimate use and see the whole picture from what the rest of the world will do with the tech. You might do the right thing, but 90% of the people out there will just start torrenting everything and not give a damn.
And I know I'm being a harsh jackass, but I'm pissed at how this is going to affect my owning a PS3 adversely.
