Wiki shows that they've had an overall good ride. There's some bumps here and there, but they seem to get countered soon after.

I don't want Shigeru anywhere near Sonic. It's just not his kind of game. He wouldn't know what to do with it. Nintendo first party games have always been very different from the stuff Sega puts out.
The same source as you. Look at the most recent history of sega's finanical history. THIS Year we know sega is pulling out of china and cancelling their online business. Two very big, money-making markets.
and look at the year before 2006
Due to the continued success of SEGA’s software sales, the company reported on May 17, 2006 a 31% rise in net profits from that of the previous year of the period ending March 31, 2006, being posted at ¥66.2 billion ($577 million), as well as an increase in operating profit growing by 13% from the previous year, being posted at ¥553.2 billion ($4.82 billion) [9] notable titles to have helped SEGA increase profits in the West being that of Shadow the Hedgehog (Which sold over a million copies [10]) and Sonic Riders, whilst in Japan, games such as Yakuza, Mushi King and Brain Trainer Portable continued to sell strong.
Though, whilst SEGA had shown promise to continue an increase in its profits, the company reported a massive drop of 93% profits for the period ending June 30, 2006 compared to the same period last of year.
In one year there were up 36 percent and then dropped 93 percent. That's pathetic and terrible management, business operations.
And look at their revunue, 800 million? That's only revnue and that's actually pretty low. We have no idea how much profit they have been making and it's probaly nil or in the negatives. And not to mention when was the last time sega released a good game? A new game? And games that has actually sold well?
Whatever. Overall, their history since the end of Dreamcast sounds positive to me. I guess if you read into it with a bad attitude, it'll look bad to you. I'm not denying that they haven't had a hit in a long while, but one of the major benefits of merging with Sammy was that gaming wouldn't be their only source of income anymore. This is the kind of thing Atari needs to pull right now or they'll be gone forever.
[UPDATE] Sega of America PR Director Charlie Scibetta is currently looking into the trademark issue and why it was updated. In the meantime he told us that Sega "has no plans to get back into the console business," adding, "We're very happy being a platform agnostic company and have moved up the ranks the past three years from #11, to #9, and now stand at #6 in terms of our market share by units among third-party publishers. We like our current strategy and have no plans to change in the middle of this outstanding growth."
