Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

A Retro Gaming Social Network

Post by racketboy »

I know the whole Social Network thing has been done to death, but with the game database in the works, I want there to be a solid way to display what's in your collection, what games you're looking for, etc and some people have expressed interest in a Social Networking aspect to it.

I'm brainstorming what kind of elements should be included and would like your input.
What features would be the most essential and which would be just nice to have?
The essentials would be things the navigation and interface should be centered around, while the extra might be things off to the side.

When designing something like this, I think its important to get these things defined ahead of time so its less stuff to redesign later.

No interest here. Not in social networking anyway. We've already got that in the forum.

I think having an easy way to know what each user has a surplus of and what each user is looking for would be useful.

yeah....uh. enough myspace/friendster/facebook like thinks exist already. that's not the direction to go. maybe just have a more advanced profile with game wants/own/trade lists and some kind of comment or feedback section, so you know how their other trades went. nothing crazy, just keep it simple. oh and friend lists, and video post, ohh and a blog, and a Second Life-ish interactive arcade. jk...

also, i still can't get my avatars to load. they work on other sites, so i know the files are ok. i've tried it a couple different ways, but no luck. any ideas?

Yeah, I wouldn't do anything full featured like Facebook or anything.
The things I could think of is for swapping games, finding local people to play against, find people interested in similar games/genres, find people to play against online, etc. It would have to be focused on the games to be included.

I can see many pros to this, but there may be a way to do this with tools already available. Granted a closed network would be better than open. If you can implement the "geotag" function that would make this very worthwhile. I know back when the GBA first came out there was a site like this, but the closest person to me was in New York - a far cry from my humble Atlanta.
