Just got my saturn, 1/4MB Cart question

Post by Onyxthecat »

Ok, so after a 3 month vacation I had my Saturn I ordered a month ago waiting for me at home. I only have one game for it so I dl'd the games that I knew would be too expensive to buy and ordered games I could afford US and J. I want to know if I still need a 1/4 MB cart with the games if I have the mod chip. Or should I just get the Action Replay cart and no mod chip? Thanks

Well, if you want to play the burned games at all, I'm almost certain you will need some sort of mod chip.

Now, since you burned a disc that is supposed to represent the original game, and play like the original game, I can only assume you would need some sort of RAM cart if it required it originally. The only way you wouldn't need one is if you were playing the game emulated or on a physically different platform trying to emulate the saturn.

Since you most likely would need the RAM cart, I would highly recommend the Action Replay 4 in 1 simply for the other features it contains, like cheat device and game save backups.

I'm not 100% positive on needing the RAM cart, but having other experience with the Action replay and importing etc on the saturn, I'm fairly certain you need one. Hopefully someone who's actually done this can confirm though. If no one can confirm, you won't lose much by trying to burn the game and trying it without the cart.

You will need the RAM cart even if you mod it. I have both the Action Replay version as well as the version sold here on Racketboy. I strongly recommend buying the Racketboy version cart over the Action Replay since it is a no nonsense type cart. You leave it in the Saturn put in your game and it just does what it has to do with no fiddling around of menus. There are no unnecessary steps that you have to go through to play the game. While it would be ideal to have both in your collection if funds are tight I'd get the one here: http://www.racketboy.com/store/featured/ram-cart.html

With Action replay you can play burned games easily. Heck, there´s even the swap disc method

Action Replay allows you to play genuine import games. You need a modchip to play backups.

Using the disc swap method will only shorten the life span of your console.

agreed, but it´s not that bad. it´s just a question of how you treat your hardware

I have. It will only boot genuine games.

Not that I really need to do that anyways. I have a modchipped Saturn, several Japanese
Saturns, a region-switched Saturn, a development Saturn, and an AR 4-in-1.

I don't understand why people use the disc swap method. You're already getting the games for free, so why cheap out and risk damaging the hardware.
